I sleep in my WKII, and the weather was so perfect that i even left the hatch open all night. I woke to the sight of a vulture on my picnic table looking at me. Hahaha
The views here are absolutely wonderful, this campground has boat access, and there is actually a small cove, so lots if boating activity, but not obnoxious, even on a holiday weekend.

We planned to stay 2 nights but first night was loud with blasting music and parties. We just prefer quiet and more solitude. Wanted to check it out though and I’m giving 5 stars because it was very nice!

Really lovely spot right on the Apache Lake off the Apache Trail. $8 per car. One pit toilet that was pretty full and another nicer pit toilet up at the entrance. There are "camp sites" with some fire pit rings, but I think when it's busy it's a free for all. You will have to level off your vehicle for sleeping. To camp here you need a Tonto Pass per vehicle per night and they must be purchased prior to arrival. A regular recreation pass for Arizona is not acceptable. We picked up two passes at the ice cream store in Tortilla Flats. You can't miss it. It has a dead guy hanging and swinging on top. The Town is old west themed. As of August 2017 there are pay machines at more developed camp sites with in the Tonto National Forest and they cost more. This is Lower Burnt Corral, but just before this place you pass a more developed camp ground called Burnt Corral and it has a pay machine and I think it's $12 to camp at that spot. All this took a lot of confusing research. A ranger did come by to check passes on a weekday. It's $100 fine if you don't have one or you forget to scratch your date of use. This was a bit of annoying run around especially after being in Mexico and Central America for the last 500 days but I'm very glad we figured it out and camped here. It's really beautiful. The lake is cold but very swim -able. Everything was quite and peaceful. If you have a water craft and want to take it out on the water that is another fee, but can be purchased when you get your pass. You can fish here too, but that's another license. You can float for free on an air mattress 😉 In October the temps were great. This is the warmest place we camped in weeks. Dogs allowed. Any vehicle over 40 feet in length or 10 tons are not allowed to drive on the Apache Trail road and watch your speed there are cops monitoring this HWY.

This is a beautiful area of Arizona. There are 4 large lakes all connected by the Salt River that runs thru. The Saguaros are plentiful here and the fishing seemed pretty good. You can drive right up to Apache Lake and camp with your door right out into the lake. The down side is you have to drive down 5 miles of washboard road and a wash to get there. The road isn't that bad but you have to be aware of rain. If it rains hard you could get stuck for a while. If your driving a rig its best to take the 87 to the 188 coming in. Its a lot further than the 60 to the 88 but it is 20 some miles of rough, hilly, unpaved road. There is no dump or fill area, but there are plenty of water spigots and toilets. We used our 5 gallon jug to fill our RV. Lower Burnt Corral is located right past the pay area that is paved. Like I mentioned earlier you have to drive down a wash to get to this gem. To stay here you have to get a Tonto Pass. It is $8 a day. Didn't here it from me but they don't check these every day. If caught without one its a $100 fine. The sheriff comes thru once a day but never bothered us. Wish I could have stayed here longer but duty calls and there was no cell service. I could get out a few text with Verizon. Only reason this isn't a 5 star is due to the fee and cell service.
