“Excellent, quiet, smaller campground in the Smokies.”

The main campgrounds in the GSMNP (Elkmont and Cades Cove) are huge, with the sites spaced very closely together. Look Rock is substantially smaller, and given the location along the Foothills Parkway, it is a bit more off the beaten path than the others. Our stay over a weekend in mid-May was exceptionally quiet, with well under 50% occupancy.

Ten sites offer electric/water, but we didn't grab one of these. The rest of the sites are a mix of tent-only and RV/tent sites. Pay close attention to the maximum vehicle length for any given site, as many are quite short. We had no trouble with a 32ft Super-C and Jeep Wrangler in Site 36. Most sites are heavily shaded, and we weren't able to make much solar off our 400W of roof-top panels because of this.

None of the sites are particularly level, and some are significantly off-level. Be mindful of that when booking if this is a concern for you.

The bathhouses are functional. There are no showers but some have slop sinks (no hot water).

An AT&T tower is very near the campground (like within a few hundred yards of the entrance) and therefore AT&T service is excellent with our Cradlepoint, we had ~85mpbs down. Verizon was non-existent for us.

Access to the campground via the the Foothills Parkway via 321 is very easy, even for large coaches. Access from Happy Valley Rd/Montvale Rd takes you up some pretty aggressive switchbacks. We had no problems with our coach/toad, but I wouldn't want to do it with a larger rig or a large bumper-pull.

We were disappointed with the CG overall. I’d say it feels more like a state park rather than part of the national park. The CG reopened in April after being closed for 8 years. At best I would categorize this as a tent site park with a handful of sites for trailers. A majority of the RV sites are very unlevel.

Camp host was friendly. No firewood or ice for sale on site.

If you are in a RV, we recommend sites 37, 40, 44 or 45. They appeared to be the most level.

Pros - proximity to west side of park, electric and water at RV sites, less busy

Cons - unlevel sites, no hand soap in bathrooms

If you’re wanting to stay inside the park, I would use Look Rock as your backup option. We would easily choose Smokemont, Elkmont or Cades Cove first.
