The office staff are very nice and friendly.
Sites are a not too level. The middle ones seem to be more level than the ones on the far end.
We have enjoyed county fairgrounds at several different states. They are a great, often overlooked, resource for quiet, safe camping.

Staff we contacted were incredibly friendly. The office, at 195 Russell St, closes at 5 and only open on weekdays. Best to get in before then or call ahead, per their request. DON’T follow the signs at the main road to the fairgrounds. Just to go the 195 Russell address to check in.

Needed easy inexpensive place for one night. However, could have stayed longer as it's very quiet and peaceful. No frills county fairgrounds. Learned they have several different places to park. Some with grass, some gravel and parking lot, with plenty of trees. Any size rig will work. Downside is you just need to figure things out yourself, as there is no "host" just the one maintenance worker for the very large property and the couple of people in the main office. After hours just park and call or walk in to pay. Only 30 amp service with water. No dump. Deer!!😀 everyplace.

Just power, water and a big lot that is sometimes used for the fairgrounds. Jim, who is friendly and helpful, met us as the gate and let us in. He showed us to a shady spot and we setup - just that easy. The area is clean except watch for the goat heads. I've noticed a couple of flies, but not more than usual. Noise level is low a... more

He showed us to a shady spot and we setup - just that easy. The area is clean except watch for the goat heads. I've noticed a couple of flies, but not more than usual. Noise level is low after a couple hours parked. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here and there are no views, but it's simple and easy to maneuver.

On my trip up US 395 in late winter this turned out to be a very convenient place to park for 2 days. The fairgrounds are right in town. The camping area is right off the street next to the National Guard Armory and the horse stalls. The surface is dirt, which with melting snow and rain had become muddy in places. The are 12 sites with hookups, neighboring spaces sharing a utility pedastal. Water and electricity are $30. Dry camping $15. I was the only one there so there was no problem. I can see when it gets busier it could get close. The water in the sites had not yet been turned on. I was able to fill my fresh water from a hose at the office building. There are no restrooms here. There was nothing going on at the fairgrounds the end of March so the place was pretty quiet. The office is only open Monday through Friday 800am - 500 pm so plan accordingly. They are very responsive through their website's comment section. Go to Facilities Rentals for the campground information. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. Susanville is an interesting railroad, lumber, and agricultural city with the Susan River flowing through it and surrounded by forested mountains. Not too far from Honey Lake and the National Wildlife Refuge. It was an okay experience and the price was right.
