Gate closed, but looks like a good camping area if it were open. Less than 5 minutes from White Sands National Park.

You are far enough off the road so it’s quiet enough. Despite the “lake” smelling it’s quiet pretty during sunrise/set.
Be aware there is an Air Force base near by that does test bombs. One went off while I was sitting there and scared me. Also every night (it seems) around 9 they play some anthem.

This was a really nice spot! The lake looks really nice! When we were there the place was completely empty! A van drove by in the morning, but other than that, no one was there. We read complaints about the smell, but it really wasn't that bad. At night we didn't smell it at all and we slept with our windows open. The only time we smelled it was when it got hot in the daytime, but it still wasn't all that bad. We even ate lunch outside with the smell.
We were coming from the west, but instead of making a left turn, Google Maps instructed us to do a U-turn. We couldn't see the entrance so we followed the directions. Bad idea. The gate and turn right after the gate made is really tight coming from the east. Our 38' fifth wheel only barely made it in and after a couple of tries. I highly recommend coming from west and making a left-hand turn into the entrance. Stick to the left side of the gate because you have to turn right as soon as you're through the gate.

A quick google search will bring articles that say PFAs here are 84 times the EPA advisory level. You're not supposed to have any contact with the water or the foam from it. It also has a mild fishy odor that can be off-putting, along with the occasional (2-3 times a week) extremely loud explosion from the nearby range. But it's right off the highway, and the gravel road in is in good shape. Most of the area is gated with restrictions, there's about 6 actual spots for RVs on the water and probably another 6-8 spots on the bumpy uneven dirt paths between the water and the gravel road. Sunsets and views are nice with a lot of birds around. Reminiscent of the Salton Sea, although its interesting and has good cell service, I'm not sure I would return now that I know the health risks.

Stinks when the wind blows from the south towards all the campgrounds. Just wait till wind dies down it does in the evening and picks up next day around noon. About 10 minute drive to White Sands National Park, there is some hiking around, and not too noisy if you get far back enough. If you hear the jets take off and land (which is rare) just remember, that's the sound of freedom, enjoy it.
If you have long rig such as 30' or longer you want to enter coming from the south not the north from Alamogordo cause it's a hair pin turn.

Staying here is pleasant. Not many people here as it just reopened. Some road noise as it’s not far from the main highway and the lake REALLY stinks. It’s lovely u til you take a breath. If you have a very good sense of smell than don’t go outside when the breeze blows off the “lake”.
