Brand new to boondocking and wondering if you have to be military to stay here? Any help would be appreciated.

There is a Chevron gas station 9 miles west on Route 70 near the town with large clean bathroom for morning business if you are in a car if you want to wash up/change or don’t want to use your potty. The coffee there is pretty good.

An awesome place to stay when visiting White Sands. Just a few minutes down the road from the park entrance and a quick drive to stores/gas. We parked right on the waters edge and woke up to an incredible sunrise reflecting off the lake. Quiet at night and about a dozen other campers.

Don’t use google maps to get directions. We were coming here out of Los Cruces and google maps wanted us to pass the entrance and flip a U turn. There is a left turn when headed east bound but it’s a 70mph road and not well marked. It also has a gate and cattle guard close together. Doable in a big rig but it’s tight. Once past that i... more

Once past that it’s all good. When we arrived there were others there but plenty of space. I typically like to get drone shot to show condition but being next to the Air Force base it is restricted. The lake is a bit smelly and swimming is not allowed. Perfect location to stop for the night and experience white sands NP

It was easy in my car, but I can see how long trailers would have a problem getting in. 2 Narrow gates and they are offset so you’d have to go through them at just the right angle. There were big trailers in there, so it can be done.

This was nice, free camping near White Sands NP. Easy access. A bit noisy due to the road nearby and military jets flying over but manageable.

This is a super neat boondocking spot - close to the city for groceries and restaurants and also less than 5min from white sands national park! It’s right next to Holloran Air Force base which was cool to see F16s flying around most of the day (also loud if you’re concerned about noise). The lake makes for nice scenery but not safe for use for humans or pets. The turn off the main road has a narrow gate entrance but plenty of 40+ ft class a motorhomes and fifth wheels made it in. Absolutely no shade which was fine for December camping but I would see being a challenge in the warmer months.

We stayed for 2 nights in our 26ft travel trailer and enjoyed stunning views and a peaceful stay. Plenty of other boondockers were around but plenty of space for everyone. It’s located right next to an Air Force base so we enjoyed watching fighter jets take off. Great access to White Sands NP as well.

I visited during the day to have lunch and check out the terrain. My RAV4 was fine on the packed dirt. There was an assortment of campers in tents, SUV, van and RV. A flock of ducks made for some entertainment. I’ll be back when I pass through next time.

There are certainly some rutted areas so take it slow. The water is a water waste evaporation site so don't get into the water or foam or let you animals drink it. It's only 4 miles to White Sands National Monument which was amazing! There were mostly vans and truck campers but a few RVs.
