“Beautiful setting and firewood at your campsite”

We had a back-in site, no services. We are self-contained so did not use toilets or water that was available. Our site had views of the mountains through the trees and was a gravel pad, fairly level, although we had to do a little work to get it there. Biggest problem with that site was there is a significant dip (not a drop-off) from the road into the camping pad. We have a travel-trailer, so I was a little worried about that, but it worked ok. Picnic table, firepit and free firewood, already split. Pay cash at the kiosk after choosing your site, although there is an option to use a credit card. We did not reserve, but this year, some sites can be reserved. Sufficient room between sites so we didn't feel crowded in any way.

Lake Kathleen is about 15 miles out of Haines Junction but was not an issue for us. It is a little way off the highway on a gravel road and is hilly. Close enough to the lake to walk down to the boardwalk. We were warned about bear activity and did see some bear sign but no bears.

The sites are on a first come, first served basis and were close to full by dinner time when we stayed in mid August. The campground is unserviced with limited recycling, clean outhouses and unlimited firewood with a permit ($8.80/day). For the most part, the entrance road was good with just a few potholes, the last bit into the campground was washboard. The sites were large and mostly level - some could accommodate a 40’ rig. There is a short trail that leads from the campground down to the lake (0.6km) which has a beach and some short walking trails. You could also walk to the trailhead for both the Kings Throne (must do) and one end of the Cottonwood Trail. We attended two ranger talks while we were there which were excellent.
