I fell in love with this campground. Other travelers are very friendly and willing to help you if needed. I felt safe as a solo mom. I arrived on a Tuesday afternoon (2-3 pm) in June and it was almost empty. It fills up on the weekends usually by early Saturday. If you can get there on a weekday, do that! I stayed 12 days, had to leave early because it was cloudy and rainy for 2 days straight and my solar was almost dead. Most people seem to stay for 1-3 days. Site 11 in the top loop is PERFECT for big rigs, so easy to back into if you’re not that great at backing up like me. 😅 it has beautiful views of the mountains and no obstructions for starlink or Solar panels. There are a lot of sites that are big enough for larger rigs. Getting there isn’t as bad as it seems, past El Macho and to Cowles there are a few sections that are narrow and some blind curves. The signs will tell you what to look out for. Not many if any potholes. Just go slow and look out for cars coming the opposite way. I say come prepared because the closest town is Pecos which is very small and only has a Dollar General and Family dollar for groceries. The closest produce and drinkable water fill up for 5 gallon jugs is at the Eldorado Supermarket in the Agora about 1 hr and 15 mins out. There’s lots of beautiful hiking trails nearby. Perfect temps in the summer time. I will miss this place so much and will definitely be back. :’)

We stayed there last August and LOVED it. Our new favorite campground in New Mexico. The Pecos Wilderness is amazing hiking and backpacking. Doesn't get any better. The road to get up there is narrow in spots and difficult for a long trailer, but we saw lots of them up there at campground so it is possible, just be aware.
We arrived on a Thursday as we were concerned about getting a spot on weekend but had no problems. Lots of people pulling out each morning, even on Saturday. Every site filled up by mid-afternoon so keep that in mind. You cannot get a site late in day any day of week. This is the best campground in Pecos area.

The road to get here was very narrow and twisty, but people were very patient. The site has options for sun and shade with good hiking all around. The camp host runs a tight ship and even locks the gate at night so I doubt thieves will be a problem with him on the job. For a little elevation to cool down, this is a terrific site.

I've stayed here numerous times. While it's clean and well-maintained, it is also a target for local thieves. In fact, the USFS warns about this. There is fishing nearby and hiking into the wilderness is convenient.
