Visited this first-come-first-served spot before during the day to scout for overnight camping, facilities include a nice vault toilet and bear-proof trash bins. Very nice fishing area and fabulous zen spot for sitting by the river. However, lots of trash strewn about and someone’s gear was left, not sure if they were returning to get it but put up a red flag for me as there were no other cars. Ranger informed me that the neighbor who lives adjacent to the park has several aggressive dogs that attacked someone the night before (yikes!) As a dog lover this was upsetting, but I didn’t want to take my chances with attracting any attention while I was cooking dinner so I switched to pre-prepared meals and ate in the cab. Two other sketchy characters pulled up and appeared to not put the permits on their windshields if they even picked them up at the pay station, they appeared to be drunk and I wasn’t going to risk those shenanigans especially with aggressive dogs around. No ranger lives nearby and the only 911 emergency phone is several minutes down the road. No cell coverage for T-Mobile. Good day spot for fishing and relaxing, take your chances for night camping.

We were prepared for a not great campground but we were so pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our stay at Bert Clancy. This campground has recently become part of Pecos State Park. The campground has 9, not very level, but doable sites. Each site has brand new, just installed, metal fire ring with attached grill. Because of these new fire rings, campfires are allowed. Right across the small access rd is the Pecos River which is absolutely beautiful and popular with fisherman. Everyone we met was very friendly. Ranger Dave checked in with us and gave us a lot of information about the area and all the changes that are being made at this state park. We hiked 3 miles up, (the closed for the season road), to Holy Ghost trailhead and campground in the Santa Fe National Forest. Another beautiful spot that would be wonderful secluded camping.
To get back to Bert Clancy campground; we would definitely camp here again, because of the beautiful scenery and the friendly people we met. There was one other person camping a couple sites over. We felt very safe and knew the area was patrolled often. Unfortunately, No cell service at all.
But Two thumbs up for Bert Clancy Campground!
Anne would stay here again

Basic camp site. No campfires allowed. $10 per night, not free. Rangers came by to check. Hiking possible but gotta find a place to jump the river. Fly fishing.
Toilets. No shower.
Some local traffic, but otherwise chill. February camping, cool, other locations I passed were closed.
A little muddy, but that’s the season.
Schnastikus would stay here again

We tried to camp at the campground but the Dictator of New Mexico declared it was unsafe so they closed the campground which has ample space and made everyone cramp together in disperse camping where I nearly got stuck with a 24’ fifth wheel.
Making it out , I camped at the second pull out that had been used before by some so I figured they wouldn’t run me off.
The first night was not peaceful as I found out, for fun, New Mexicans like to honk their horns as they pass your trailer for some reason as you’re try to rest and relax.
Perhaps they find it amusing.
I’ll have to remember that when I meet one in my state. I’ll be sure and make them feel welcome.
