I drove up to French Creek early July 2021 to fish and check out the campground. It is 20 miles from Encampment to French Creek Campground and takes about an hour to complete the drive up. From what I recall the road was 2wd passable all the way.
Snowpack and rainfall were sparse last season so French Creek was running really low. As I mentioned in the summary the campground, and campsites, were pretty much grown over with vegetation. The sites are small, 20' or less, and the trees overhang most of the loop road through the campground. There is an old vault toilet and there was toilet paper so someone is checking the facility at some interval.
Long story short I was really disappointed with the creek and campground. There are better creeks and better campgrounds in the area. I won't be going back.
