***Name Changed to Blakeslee AF Recreation Area***
***Military Family Camp - Restricted use area***
Arrival - While making reservations here was very straightforward, checking in at registration was a little more difficult as the registration office is a fair distance from the RV area in an area that is not easy to negotiate with an overall length of 65' (TV + 5ver); plan accordingly.
Tips - Having it to do again, I would find out what spot you're assigned, park your rig and then go down to the registration area either on foot or in your TV/toad. Make sure you note the orientation of your site as there are no pull-throughs.
Favorites - 70' site on concrete pad. Super close to the beach, very clean, very quiet, well maintained for the most part. Kure Beach is three blocks down the street, Fort Fisher is a couple miles away, the ferry to Holden beach is also very close; let's not forget Carolina Beach. Great food and things to do in all beach communities. There is also a restaurant, fishing, and a museum on site. Clear skies above for Starlink
Negatives - As noted above and the orientation of the sites; this place used to be a mobile home park. You may have to do some creative negotiation to get into your site appropriately to use the FHU.

Arrival - Super easy registration process if booked well in advance.
Tips - Book well in advance, be aware of the rules and regulations, stock up before arriving.
Favorites - Location close to the Atlantic and intercoastal waterway, concrete pads, large sites, open skies.
Negatives - Little in the way of support services and Air Force amenities, price is on the higher end for military family camps.

There are some very large grassy areas which our dog loved to run in. There are a number of 1/2/3/ bedroom, brand new cabins here. Each with Adirondack chairs, picnic tables and barbecues.
The little museum is awesome.
We were here off season (early December) on the weekend the campground was 3/4 full, pretty slim during the week. You can hear the surf from your bed!! Sweet

We camped at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area over the week of Mon, 22 Aug through Thu, 25 Aug. It's located on the main drag in the vicinity of Kure Beach and is well marked with signage. The main camping area was all occupied or reserved, so we were placed in Site #35 in the "overflow".
Note that the facility is reserved for Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists, Retired Military, 0-100% DAV, Purple Heart Recipients, Former POW, Veteran Caregivers, DoD Civilians, and their Guests. Go directly to their website to make online reservations. You can also telephone them, but be prepared to leave a voicemail.
The overflow sites are all spotted near the Recreation Center and all appear to have full hookups (water, full electric, sewer, and cable). We actually preferred our spot to camping in the main area because their pads were rather closely packed together and the overflow sites were fairly well spread out. The only thing was our site was all grass and sandy clay, with no concrete pad, so we had to be careful not to track stuff into our trailer.
Our site had a virtually brand-new power pedestal with 20/30/50 amp receptacles, but the water spigot had seen better days (it was hard to turn, but at least it didn't leak or spray). The sewer access was reachable with just one slinky hose, but just barely (it pays to check before detaching your trailer, in case you have to adjust). Cable? Fuggeddaboutit! The staff even provided a cable and channel box - but our hookup was so badly cross-threaded that we could not get the cable properly attached (we're not big TV users, so it was no big deal).
One other specific issue at Site 35 was that there formerly was a house trailer located there and when it was torn down the concrete blocks upon which it rested were not removed, so park with caution.
The Recreation Center contained the reception desk, some rental sports equipment, and a selection of snacks and souveniers. It was open from 0900 thru 1700 on weekdays (I didn't take note of their weekend hours).
Further down the road towards the pier there was some sort of restaurant, but it only opens evenings, Thu - Sat, so we did not get to see inside. There's also a National Guard military museum and some static displays (tanks, guns, etc.), but the museum itself has very limited hours of operation.
Fort Fisher is in the midst of renovating many of its facilities, so while they are mostly kept clean, the curent toilets and bath house near the overflow sites are a bit worn out. A newer structure is almost completed. -- A warning: the ladies' toilet had a sticky door that opens to the inside. My wife was unable to pull it open and had to phone me to come shoulder it open for her to escape.

What a great park! Great location, great price. Easy to get to. Not sure if they have a laundry room or not and we never used the bath house. The utilities location are a little weird, I needed 2 sewer extensions. My neighbor has his electric cable underneath his trailer since the box was on the wrong side. I also noticed another trailer turned around for the same reason. You have ocean beach access from the park with a walkway. The park has water access on the Kure River. I’m a bicycle rider, the riding was fantastic. Fort Fisher & the Aquarium are close by. There isn’t any shopping in the park, but there is a Publix a few miles away.
