Smith Lake is actually a hiking trail, there is no officially named "Smith Creek Dispersed camping", and the sites near there are not "true" dispersed camping sites they are "Designated Dispersed Sites" which all have a picnic table and firegrate.
Most sites do not provide any shade so it is wise to bring a canopy.
As of June 2024 it is now $10 per night, the sites are located off the road on Forest Service Road 900 just 15 miles outside of Yampa, CO. (Near Yamcolo Reservoir and Bear Lake Reservoir and Stillwater Trailhead Reservoir.) Which all offer great fishing and floating.
Mosquitos are thick and only 40% Deet works.
No reservations taken, first come basis only and must pay with exact cash or check, no credit cards accepted.

Campsite is near Horseshoe and Cold Springs Campgrounds. Those were both full when we were there and this is a very popular, heavily trafficked area. It's near the end of a dead end road, nine miles one way on a gravel road and we couldn't believe how much traffic there was. Trailheads for several hikes, including overnights plus fishing. Sites have picnic tables and fire pits, but no toilet or water. Pay station (and water) are at Horseshoe. Horseshoe and Cold Springs are $10/night, these other sites outside the campgrounds are $5/night. Wild flowers were in full bloom during our stay, plus marmots, snowshoe hares, chipmunks entertained us. No cell service, which is nice once in awhile if you're prepared. Pack lots of tolerance if you're there during season!
RT would stay here again
