We also used our stand up paddleboards and had a great time on the water. Would love to stay here again. Of course we loved the proximity into Durango as well. Overall would recommend this location.

Forest Road 852 is off the uphill side of 603 (the main road around the east side of the lake), just north of the entrance to North Canyon developed campground. Go up the hill and you'll find a handful of dispersed sites on the left side of the road. Most are reasonably level, and all have rock fire rings (though there was a fire ban in effect when we were here).
The road is graded about halfway up, then it becomes quite rough dirt. So, small to medium-size RVs will be fine to the first couple of sites, but beyond there high clearance is required (and it looks like it's nigh-impassable when wet). I'm not sure how accessible any of these sites would be for big rigs, however - probably best to scout it first and make your own decision.
What really makes these sites special, however, are the spectacular views over Vallecito Reservoir and to the Weminuche Wilderness beyond. We spent one night at the North Canyon campground down the hill before finding this - and promptly moved.
