Some of the lushest desert landscaping we've encountered in the southwest, and a wonderful location.
There are frequently border patrol runs, as Darby Well Rd is a main road between Ajo and the wildlife refuge. The plus side.. this means the area is pretty darn safe, but there is frequently high speed traffic through the area.
There is also a bunch of trash.. disgraceful. We spent time every day picking it up around our spot and hope we left it in much better condition than when we got there. Please folks.. pack it, pack it out.
With a booster, Verizon is very usable here. AT&T is off network, so be ware of your data roaming caps (they just will eventually cut you off.)
Oh, and be sure to watch 'Night of the Lepus' while here.. it was filmed in Ajo in 1972. There's a great mural in town dedicated to it. It's so bad.. it's good.

But it's easy to get to, and if you're on your way through on the way to or from Tucson, it's a good stopover. The turnoff from AZ 85 is plainly marked. The gravel road is well-maintained, and there are numerous turnoffs into sites which are spacious and pretty level. There were rigs of all kinds parked along the road in, from vans to big Class A's. The road goes in for about a mile, to the intersection with Bates Well Road. That may be the last convenient place to turn around if you're in a big rig.
Cell service was passable without a booster for my Verizon Mifi. There's an ATT signal as well, but ATT users should note that this is "Off Network" and you may get hit for extra fees.
There's a fair amount of traffic along the gravel road: I think it's an access road for four-wheeling, and I watched a couple of caravans of jeeps headed in on a Saturday morning and out that evening. There was a little road noise from the highway where I pulled in, but nothing problematic.

Close to town (about 1 mile out of downtown Ajo) and about as scenic as you are going to find for desert camping. We camped 3/4 of a mile down Darby Wells Rd (before the sign mentioned in the previous review) right along the road. As expected we had a little dust from passing cars, but they were not all that common. In return, we were all on our own, with everyone else grouped closer to the sign as mentioned. It also seems to be cleaner in this area (about a half mile from the sign)... maybe due to less use?
Water can be found behind the post office or purchased at several locations in town from vending machines ($1 for 5 gallons)
Verizon signal is not perfect. I got a regular 2 bars of LTE with a 7db antennae (not booster) and regular 3G without. Both would cut out occasionally, but manageable.

Darby Wells Road is a wonderful boondocking location in Ajo, AZ. There are saguaros everywhere and even some organ pipe cactus. It is one of my favorite boondocking locations to date even though there is a terrible litter problem (glass and metal waste). The 3G Verizon data connection was a little slow (even with a booster), you have to camp closer to the illegal activity sign to get the best cell service.
