All RV sites are reservable. Check online for availability before coming. Walk in tent sites are FCFS. No Verizon cell signal. Down in bottom of canyon, so cell service for other providers is unlikely.

We were here early May. It was a bit breezy in the evening but not bad. Although it can get windy. The park ranger said it thins out a bit in the summer due to the heat. If you are using any GPS to get here you will want to look for Lone Tree Campground, not the State Park. And all for $10.

Visited for 4 days in April 2022 just after a big snowstorm. Campsites are HUGE for an Oregon State Park and extremely well layed out and mostly level (we needed 2 blocks on site 5). Asphalt entry and day use area with gravel loop for campground. FANTASTIC bathrooms and hot showers, great onsite facilities for hanging out, learning, exploring, getting your (and your dogs) feet wet. And there is PLENTY of hiking, Mtn Biking, fishing, and just extreme beauty everywhere you look. This is (in my opinion) the nicest OR State Park, and that is saying something. They are all reservable now and have potable water to fill your tanks but there are NO hookups or dumpstation onsite, there ARE really cool solar charging stations all over the park for your electronics. There are dumpstations in Moro and Biggs Junction.
Amazing hiker/biker and tent sites!! Everyday you look around and can't believe what a beautifull place you are in. Seriously folks this is a special place and a big shout out to the rangers who were super cool.

We fell in love with Cottonwood Canyon SP and its Lone Tree Campground. The grounds are beautiful. The property was originally a ranch and many of the buildings have been maintained and repurposed. There are biking/hiking trails that leave from the campground and it’s situated on the John Day River with several trails for river access around the campground.
The sites are well-spaced and as the trees/shrubbery grow there will be even more privacy between spaces. The grass is irrigated so it’s a green oasis in a desert landscape. Although sites do not have any hookups there is potable water, sink dumps, and pit toilets around the campground. Most sites are back-in with a few pull-throughs, the pads are crushed rock, level, and several are long enough to accommodate any sized rig. Each site has a picnic table and firepit and most also have a wooden shade structure and windbreak. Note: no open fires are allowed during summer months.
There are also has several very nice cabins for rent, an information station, and discovery center (still closed due to the pandemic during our stay). Near the cabins is a comfort station with flush toilets and showers. Some of the nicest we’ve seen! We were pleased to find recycling as well as garbage cans. Another perk is the HUGE fenced off-leash dog park – probably an acre just for the pups! This park is a gem and we would not hesitate to come again.
The only downside, there is absolutely no cell service. There are however several solar charging stations with USB charging ports, how’s that for the height of irony? Lol.

Overflow camping for RVs in Day Use parking lot with tent camping in large grassy area with fire pits and tables. All on the John Day River. Beautiful dark skies for star gazing. Can be very windy and very hot during summer but spring is wonderful. Super quiet area with the sound of the river constantly in the background.

We have visited this campground twice now, both times in February on crisp, cool, but clear weekends. There were more people camping than I expected, but still not very many. This park is on the newer side, not much vegetation has grown up yet so sites are not private. The way the park is nestled in the canyon along the river makes it feel like a pioneer settlement, a very neat ambiance. Can be windy, there are wind walls at various sites for visitor comfort and the trees have supports to protect them also. The Pinnacles and Hard Stone trails follow the river from either end of the park. They are nice walks to stretch your legs and see the park from a distance. This park is away from the hustle and bustle of any city, so you have to make an effort to come here, which may cut down on the park traffic. On our most recent visit the park was undergoing some significant construction so it looks like more sites, cabins, and power are headed to the park..... Not sure how I feel about that. All in all we really loved this park and will definitely be back.
