The Coal Mine campground had 15 campsites that have wooden picnic tables, raised BBQ grills and ground-level fire pits with metal enclosures. The loop road around the campground is paved, but the spurs are gravel. There is not much shade. #12 was probably the one site that had the most shade and the most privacy. When you lose the shade over and around the picnic table at campsite #12, there's plenty of shade in the trees nearby until the sun goes down.
Tuesday and Wednesday were the days when the campground was the most quiet. Starting on Thursday, things started picking up as a lot of the younger people showed up increasing the noise level. I suspect, it bein' summer and all, the younger generations from town consider it a nice place to hang out, cooler too. There is no water at this campground. All campsites are first-come, first-serve. This campground does not have a camp host present.
The gnats were pretty bad while I was there - they just wouldn't leave me alone. But having a wet washrag to sling at them whenever they came around was something they did not like at all. Persistent devils they are.
BTW, there is a New Mexico corrections facility located on the highway to the campground, so don't go picking up any hitchhikers on your way to and from the campground. And they have signs posted to that effect.
On your way to the campground you will pass the Mt. Taylor District Office for the US Forest Service. It might be a good idea to stop there if they're open for informational updates with regards to camping in their district. Nice people, very helpful.
There is a Walmart and a Smith's Grocery Store in Grants NM. And I agree with the reviewer who recommended El Cafecito. I went back there twice while camping at Coal Mine.
Directions: From Grants, New Mexico take highway 547 north. There will be a sign on the right that is easy to miss. It's about 8.5 miles to the campground from town.
Safe travels & great camping,
The Ornery Toad

My RV is 24 feet and no problem finding a site and driving thru the campground. Probably not a good place for bigger rigs. Plenty of trees. Grills, fire pits and picnic tables at each site. It was a beautiful drive to the campground. I would stay again. We like remote camping and boondocking. If you want amenities, this is not the place for you. Safe travels.

If you are looking for amenities, this is not the place. If you are looking for real peace and quiet and dark skies, this is it. The campground is right next to NM-547, but there is so little traffic the road is hardly noticeable. There is a ranch road bordering just to the east, but I think we saw all of about 4 vehicles pass through it over 6 days. Weekdays there were just one or two other campers in the campground. July 4 weekend it was almost full, but the "crowd" was quiet and well-behaved. Elevation about 1,000 feet higher than Grants, and thus about 10 degrees cooler than in-town. Some of the sites have good shade from mature pine and pinon trees. Very no-frills camping, even by USFS standards. Sites are well spaced. The most desirable seem to be the back-in spaces, although they would generally be short for a long trailer or big rig. Our 22' trailer was fine. Expect to make use of your leveling blocks. Roads are paved, as are the sites, and the pavement is in good condition. Some sites are ok for a small tent, but it would be hard to find a level spot for a very big tent. Toilets are very clean, but toilet paper was not consistently stocked. There is no water. Picnic tables were in good repair. Verizon cell service is almost nonexistent. There were a few spots in the campground that we could get 1-2 bars of 1x and make a decent phone call. Sometimes the display actually showed 2-3 bars of 3G or 1 bar of 4G, but there must have been just a detectable amount of signal. Not enough to be useable. Texting is iffy without a boster. Most times we were able to get Verizon 4G internet using a Winegard hotspot and MiMo booster antenna. I measured 75-95 ms ping speeds, up to 6 mbps down and 0.4 mbps up. I was actually able to stream a YouTube video once. But there were a few times we could not get a signal even with the booster. We will camp here again.
BTW, while you are there, you must eat at El Cafecito in Grants. Wow! Excellent southwestern fare.

MI“Closed October 16-May 14”

I drove up to Coal Mine after deciding not to camp at Joe Skeen as the reviews of the road freaked me out. Got up there to find it closed. Never occurred to me to check. Ended up at Walmart as it was too late to look for something else. Looked like a nice campground. Open May 15-Oct 15
