The road down has a steep section but only 2 curves had bad ruts. We went slow in 4-wheel drive in our dually truck with cabover camper and were fine both ways. Wide and slow, you’ll be ok. I also wouldn’t suggest large trailers. It was nicely graveled. The pay station is credit card/debit only. The sites are mostly heavily wooded and fairly flat. We were here end of Aug and enjoyed picking wild raspberries. We walked the 1/2 mile down to the water and back. A wonderful view of the glacier, eagles and small bays. A good overnighter.

We stayed 1 night ahead of a ferry ride. It’s definitely an adventure getting down the road which is declared as “not maintained”. We got our 2wd Sprinter down, going very slowly and using the whole road to avoid some ruts and potholes. I wouldn’t recommend a big rig or even a big trailer on those switchbacks. Nice walk to the shoreline, which was breezy and kept the blackflies and mosquitoes at bay.
Very quiet spot. Nice sites.

Beautiful location. Dry camping. Road in is a significant challenge. 14 percent grade and severe washboards. We made it with our 28’ trailer.

“GO SLOW ....to avoid ruts in road...”

We decided to drive down to Chilkat and hike (in our tow vehicle) - yes there are ruts, potholes but definitely not on the whole road. I felt they were avoidable with driving the whole width of the road...as always “scout it out first and make your own decisions”—- however if you do, you won’t be disappointed!! Beautiful campground, very clean, nice pull thru spots, very spacious wooded, some of backin spots have a slight tilt, but plenty that don’t! I couldn’t believe in August only a few campers there... we saw camper vans, class C, and few car campers. Also we did have 2 bars of ATT probably enough for emails, and calls.

We didn’t end up staying here, but we did decide to drive down without our RV to check it out since we were told by a local that the road is not maintained. Great advice it turns out, since the road down was full of deep potholes you cannot avoid. There is also a pretty steep and winding section that was pretty hairy! The campground itself is self-registration, and we did see one pretty large RV down there, along with a few tents. The sites were heavily forested and private, and it seemed very peaceful. I think we may have been able to do the road at a snails pace, but it looked like we were going to get some rain and didn’t want to risk getting rained in. This road also takes you to a few hiking trails and a beautiful view of some waterfalls.
