We stayed at site number 1 on Bear Trap Road north. There are 8 sites along the frontage road going north from the boat launch. Most sites are huge and can fit two large trailers or more. We stayed at site number 1 on Bear Trap Road north. There are 8 sites along the frontage road going north from the boat launch. Most sites are huge and can fit two large trailers or more. Several are pull through. The sites are all right on the river and have steps going down to the water. Some sites have little baby pools that people have made with rocks. If you drive past site 8 you won’t find any boondock sites or anywhere else to camp but there is a turn around by the gate at the end that would be okay for fairly large trailer to turn around in.
There are 7 sites on the other side of the road (Bear Trap South). To access those go back to the entrance for the big campground across the river and turn south at the entrance instead of going into the campground. I personally prefer the sites at North.
It’s fun to sit and watch all the rafters float by your site all day long.
TIP: in site 1 we had a loop so could park our trailer any direction we wanted. Thanks suggest to park parallel to the river. We parked perpendicular and were rocked quite a bit by strong winds.

This place was heaven. We were originally planning on camping at Red Mountain Campground across the river, but saw some RVs on the other side of the river and decided to check it out. So glad we did! Once you pass the sign for Bear Trap North, there are 4-5 established fee campsites on the right. If you keep going past those, there are numerous turnoffs along the road with fire rings right along the Madison River. Park wherever you like and enjoy the river. The road is well maintained packed gravel. Saw several large RVs pass by. Plenty of room between sites.
Only downside: absolutely no Verizon service
