Highly recommend a stay here for peace and quiet and a retreat in the pines!

Late June 2024. Traveling north to get out of the heat. Pull through Campsites, not very level. Poor mobile signal.

It was easy to book a spot online. When I arrived the park ranger was very friendly and helpful. There were nice hiking trails to take the dog for a walk. You can also go hang out by the lake. The lake is a short walk from camping area. There is a boat ramp and swim area a short walk in the other direction. You're totally on the woods so it's dark, airless all day. The bugs were the worst I've ever experienced. Not just the flies, ticks and mosquitoes but swarms of some tiny white things that came out at dusk. If I left any lights on in my motorhome they literally covered the windows, even with blinds down. It was impossible to sit out at night and enjoy a fire. The lake is muddy, and murky and nothing I'd want to swim in. It is out in the middle of no where so it's quite a drive to get there.

Only snacks at the entrance gate so stock up in Atlanta. No OTA channels but our hot spot was good enough to stream. We stayed two days in late February and shared our loop with only 4 other campers plus the host. The other campground only had 2 campers. During our walks, all we could hear were birds ( a lot of wood ducks) and the occasional fishing boat on the lake. This was the perfect stop to rest after a couple of long travel days.

We stayed in a FHU back-in site in the Knight's Bluff camp area, close (but not too close) to the restrooms with a nice small meadow between us and the woods. Nearby trailhead for Volksmarch trail is the opening to 4+ miles of excellent walking trails. This was the first weekend in February, so the area was very quiet during the week, but fully occupied on Saturday. No lake view from these sites, but we were only a short walk from the picnic area on the bluff which provides an unobstructed view of Lake Wright Patman. I carried my lawn chair to this open space on a cool moonless night and was rewarded with a spectacular view of the dark, star studded sky. The men's restroom (unheated) at Knight's Bluff has two private shower stalls, one wheel-chair accessible. Lots of hot water but it flows everywhere, so finding a dry area to stand while getting dressed was impossible.
