The host they have there are a cancer to this campground. They prefer to harrass their campers instead of doing their jobs. The campsite especially these I listed are the best on the campground. A few years ago we had a great experience but this time the sites are very over grown with weeds. There is very little gravel to help with water run off, so if it rains you will be in a small pond. Restrooms are disgusting (I wouldn't even let my dog use them). My daughter came to visit she's 40 days post-op and advised the host she would be there soon because we wanted to take her to see the fireworks. Having 3 sites you are allowed 4 vehicles per site so we could have 12. We had 9 at the time. My daughter called and said the host wouldn't allow her to come in. I asked the host why she wasn't allowed to enter and I was told there were no more vehicles allowed. I had to get my daughter to get out in the pouring rain to take her in. These hosts should be replaced immediately. Now if they would do there other obligations with cleaning I believe people wouldn't mind tolerating their narcissistic personalities, but that isn't the case. So if you choose to go there be prepared of alot of BS from them. I won't be staying there anymore until they are gone.

I just kept forgetting to put it on, unlike my husband. The only downside is that the “main” dump was only open on Sundays, but we used the one by the bathhouse no problem.

The campground is about 15 miles from Thomson, GA (which has all the shopping and restuarants one could want), easy to get to and deep into the woods where the only sounds at night are frogs and crickets. Interior roads are paved and easy to navigate for any sized rig.
The sites here are - in a word - enormous! There are 80 sites spread out over the main road and several loops which is a 3 mile round-trip walk. Most sites are pull thrus and some have a fairly sloped driveway to the pad, but with care in a larger rig, this should pose little problem. Water and electric hookups (dump station near entry house) at each site. Sites offer ample privacy as most are spread out from each other and are level, composed of a very fine gravel/dirt mix which is very solidly packed - actually very nice. Each site offers a large picnic table, utility table, fire ring, stand-alone grill and lantern hooks. Only a couple would not be able to accommodate a larger rig. Did I mention the sites here are enormous?
The manner in which this campground and the sites have been laid out has resulted in 76 of the 80 sites being right on the waterfront. Sites 40, 43, 44 and 61 are the exceptions. Some sites have more trees between the pad and waterfront than others, but all offer a beautiful lake view right from your door. Absolutely gorgeous.
Very pleasant staff which tends to sites when a new arrival is due -- cleaning, emptying fire pits, arranging left-over wood and raking. A very nice touch. Two bath houses here, one of which has one shower and the other has 2 shower stalls, although the "dressing area" at that bath house offers little, if any, privacy. There is a beach area and a playground located between sites 77 and 78.
I would advise selecting a site which faces west. If the clouds are right, the sunsets here over the lake are sublime! See two photos.
Did I mention the sites here are enormous??!!

We used an "interagency lifetime senior pass" which gave us half off the camping rate, making it $13/night. Pretty much all sites were pull through, the back ins were generous in size. Other than the lake, small beach and walking the different loops, there's not much to do here. Saw a lot of folks with boats. A canoe or kayak would be a plus (next time!).

Winfield is one of several Corps of Engineers campgrounds located on J. Strom Thurmond Lake in Appling, Georgia. It is a popular destination for fishing, hunting, and water sports. We camped here in April, 2014 in a 35 foot fifth wheel. The rate shown is with the Senior Pass.
Our site was a large gravel pull through with water and electric hookups, a picnic table, fire ring, and was only a few steps to the lake. The sites are spaced far enough apart that there is plenty of privacy. There are several loops in the campground with many water front sites. Boaters can beach their boat at their site. The park has a playground and marina. The restrooms were clean and the entire park was well maintained.
The park is very close to Mistletoe State Park which has hiking trails and other activities. Nearby Augusta, Georgia hosts the Masters Golf Tournament each year. We enjoyed visiting the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Harlem, Georgia. Shopping and restaurants are only a short drive away.
