This campground is a little gem… it has rolling hills and sits along the Shiawassee River with mature trees and a good mix of sunny and shady camp sites. Everything is kept clean and tidy; landscaping, bathrooms, the beach and the swimming pond are all clean.
The camp sites are well-grassed, generous sized and the campground regularly hosts family gatherings and other group camping trips. About half the sites are seasonal, and most seasonal campers appear to take great pride in the upkeep of their sites. As of 2022, no non-seasonal campsites are full hook-ups, but the owners tell me that there are a number of upgrades planned for 2023 onward, starting with adding sewerage service to some of the sites at the back of the campground.
The campground has many amenities such as a large floating water play structure in the pond, several playgrounds, beach volleyball, a basketball court, a baseball diamond, a game room, pedal bike rentals, a fishing pond, a nature trail, and Chef’s canoe rental shares part of the riverside inside the campground where you can rent canoes or kayaks. Additionally, they have several themed weekends throughout the season such as “Christmas in July,” and a Halloween weekend for the kiddos.
Now some things could be improved, as with any campground, but the owners have plans in motion to address many things. Some things that need improvement from my assessment include the bathrooms; there are many outhouses located around the grounds but they’re really old and are not something you’d want your campsite adjacent to (but this is not unusual or specific to Walnut Hills - any campground that has out houses would probably be like this)… but there is a central shower and bath building, but it could use a little TLC. Further, I think adding more full hook up sites would be a nice improvement (however it’s something that is in the works, as I’ve said). Lastly, it’d be really great if there was strong Wi-Fi… if not for the people who live here full time, then for those of us who work remotely (which is pretty common in this post-COVID era).
All in all, I’d put this place on your list to camp at for a long weekend; it’s peaceful, beautiful, and represents most things camping should be!
Doug would stay here again
