It was about 30 miles before we got into cell service again.

We were trying to find one of the 2 equestrian campsites in sheldon national wildlife refuge, but we came in in the dark, and with no directions found on line. We ended up at Virgin Valley campground. We had to tie out overnight to the side of the trailer as it is national park and no highlining, plus there are no trees nor structures to highline to anyway. Pretty primitive, off grid, no shade camping. Beautiful sage brush desert unending riding. We got up early and took advantage of the beautiful sunrise and the cooler temperature. There was a warm spring pool st the camp, that we also took advantage of. It was quite glorious! Really enjoyed the warm spring and the beautiful, yet rustic, spa like shower. I wish we could have found the Equestrian Camps, but this worked out find, and the camp host didn’t say a word to us about having horses there. Potable water was available. No service.

Keep windows closed when driving in. Horse flies galore. But none (few) at the camping place. Luke warm pool, Luke warm showers, luke warm drinking water. Little "leave one take one" library. Very quiet. No cell but starlink works fine. A place to come back to.

I was there 6/17/22. The campground was packed. It seems like all the rock hounds who didn’t want to stay at the mines stayed here. There was a ton of OHVs and. A lot of rigs with generators. The place next to us had generators going from 6:30am off and on till dark. There is no cell service anywhere near here. It’s crowded seclusion. ... more

My daughter and I found this place late at night. What a surprise to wake up to! The hot springs was nice first thing in the morning, then to get out and instant coolness! The shower was great! Everything was wonderful, yes the flies or crickets or whatever they were are a bit much BUT can easily be ignored with how awesome the place is!

Was planning to spend the night here on a Friday, first week of May. I enjoy visiting National Wildlife Refuges and the place sounded OK from previous reviews. When we arrived in the early afternoon, the campground was nearly full. As others have mentioned, it is essentially a dirt parking lot with picnic tables. It was pretty bleak looking, hot, had too many people and the warm pool was smaller than I expected. As you can expect, it is high desert without shade. We moved on after filling up our water tank. We drove on to Big Spring Reservoir campground, the next option off Hwy 140 on the Refuge. I didn't notice on the Refuge map key that the reservoir is labeled as Intermittent/Dry Lake, and it was dry upon our arrival with gusts of wind blowing fine dust off the lake bed. No people though. We continued on to Fremont National Forest in southern Oregon and found a great spot.

I wish I had more time because I would have loved to explore this area a bit more. Camping is FREE, showers are FREE, pool is FREE, views are FREE, sunsets are FREE, drinking water is FREE! A lovely remote campground! Forget about the internet cause there’s ZERO connectivity. Warm spring pools and associated waterfowl abound. Raptors too. I would hate this place in summer, and even in May, the sun will crisp you like a slice of bacon on a high flame. If you can make shade via an awning or some such thing, you’ve got it made because the breeze was still cool. Lots of cool outbuildings to explore, and a covid closed black opal mine a few miles down the road. I glassed the surrounding hills all afternoon into evening but didn’t see a thing. However, rumor has it there are wild burros, and other sorts of ungulates. Fellow campers were quiet, no drama, no loud music, just a really zen atmosphere! Fill your tank to the brim before you head out there, because there is NOTHING for many miles in either direction.

Each site has a table and a fire ring. The pit toilets were a bit beat up but fine. The view are nice. That being said it’s basically a giant parking lot. Good enough for a stop over.
