The views of the formations & the valleys are amazing. We would definitely stay again. Coming in from the west, the road is more challenging. For the wheel base on some bigger rigs, coming in this way may be ok, however we sustained some damage to the rear stabilizers of our 37ft. bumper pull trailer. Some of the dips in the gravel road are short & steep, causing us to drag the rear of our trailer. When we stay here again we will park near the east entrance & use our motorcycle to go exploring.

We had two great spots about 5 and 6 miles in from the east entrance. We were in a 22 ft. B+ and were able to navigate the main road and a couple of well chosen side trails. Be careful on the side roads, as it is easy to get into trouble. If we couldn’t see, we jog down the road and took a look. How many of the side roads, once you get in there’s no way to turn around. The scouting is the best practice. We will definitely be back.

What an amazing place to camp. There are tons of great spots all over. I decided to slow down for a day and just watch the sun change on the rocks. I highly recommend slowing down and just taking it in!

We did the full drive, but entered from 163 per reviews. I do think this is better as it’s higher up and you have better views ! It’s also easier access for most cars I think.
Definitely bring wet wipes as the red sand gets everywhere! We arrived around 5:30pm/6pm and found a spot with no problems!

“Beautiful Views, Lots of Pulloffs”

Lots of pulloffs on the entire 17 mile loop. Wish we had camped down the loop a bit further to get closer to the rock formations. Had 2 bars of signal but the internet wouldn’t load so I think too many people were on the cellphone tower. Overall, great free camping with beautiful views.

The road is definitely a rough one and there are a lot of deep dips and hills where you can't see over the hood to know which way the road is going until you start down again. I saw lots of large 5th wheels going in further than I did.
After the first night there we unhitched and drove the rest of the 17-mile loop to see if we could find a spot we liked better but ours was hard to beat.
Be forewarned, there is a lot of traffic during daylight hours and the dust is terrible. I have a white dog who turned a lovely shade of pink from all the dust while we were there.
I didn't see any litter so nice and tidy.
Day visitors continually pulled into my site and made themselves at home taking pictures, talking really loudly, and walking right through my setup. Stop, take a photo quietly, and move on.

Great drive and I was glad I left my trailer behind... the road did get a little narrow and wash boarded in spots. I would not travel this road during wet weather or when it is forecast.
Our spot was fine but the road does get a fair amount of traffic. When I do this again I'll drive a little further if necessary to get one of the sites slightly off the main road. We did eat a lot of dust from road traffic.

I don’t think there are any sites without a great view. We had no problem in our big rig, although there are some hairy curves at the halfway point of the loop that I wouldn’t want to do hooked up. Plenty of side trips to take, but if you have time and like ruins, Hovenweep was worth the journey. Nearby Monument Valley is closed.
Two negatives..........cell service is next to non existent. If it was great, we figured this area would be much busier than it was. Also, the nearby towns are tiny, and some are “dry,” so plan ahead. Water and dumping can be found in Blanding.
Beautiful stop.

This place is amazing. Yes, there's a wash with water in it that you must cross. But when we visited in late February, it was just a puddle. We easily crossed in our super low to the ground 35ft class c. The road is pretty bad, but we've been on worse. There are A LOT of places to boondock here! And honestly I never see this place filling up.
The road is 17 miles long and there are plenty of site along the first 10 miles or so.
I would not, and I repeat, I would NOT drive further than that. The road has some serious dips and for long rigs, you would literally get stuck in the dip.
Now, the bad.
There is absolutely nothing around, but even worse, no Internet. This is a must for us as we travel and work full time from the road. We have service will all the carriers. Verizon was a no-go, no data signal anywhere in the valley or the surrounding areas including Mexican Hat dispersed.
AT&T was barely trickling in at about 500 KB/s. Yes, kilobits per second. This is actually why we left, because we needed better Internet for work. Even by Mexican Hat, with line of site to the towers, we were barely clocking 800kbps.
Goosenecks State Park faired better, as we were able to get 1mbps, but even so, it's barely a blip.
Absolutely beautiful area, and we will definitely be back for an off-grid stay!

Although I have not camped at Valley of the Gods I have been through it a couple times. There are sections of the road I would not wish to attempt while towing anything but the smallest of trailers and maybe not even then.
There are two entries to VOTG. One is along the east side from highway 163 at about 37.234911, -109.814266. This is a fairly steep drop for a 100' or so if memory serves, and it fords a stream which may be a challenge at times. It's worth consulting a satellite view. That said, I have seen some good size RVs not too far from that entrance which both surprised and amazed me as to how that got into their spots. Magic, I think. I would wager are really, really good at towing their trailers and that they came in from 163 as opposed to traveling from the other entrance off 261 on the west side--I do not think they would be able to navigate through the park with its short but steep and blind rises and falls, tight turns and in many places poor road conditions.
Camping within VOTG is allowed only spaces that have been used before and these are limited. Unfortunately, I have personally encountered campers pulling off the road just anywhere to camp and the soil in VOTG is very delicate. The unsightly scars these people leave will last for decades. So please, if you must camp in VOTG use ONLY campsites that have very obviously been used before.
I would recommend people camp at nearby Goosenecks State Park instead and make Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, Mexican Hat and Moki Dugway into day trips. There are is also some free boondocking in the area and one little known fact is that if you enter Goosenecks State Park and drive its very short campground road you will quickly leave the park boundary and when you do free boondocking can be done there.
