Stay in front for warmer temps, views, signal, sunsets, common area
Stay in back for cooler temps, privacy, quietness, isolation, hiking
In the mornings great time to hike with many fire roads and trails.

Huge area available for dispersed camping. A lot of spots available throughout the dirt road. Close to Las Vegas if you plan on renting a camper there (like my wife and I did). Amazing view during sunrise and sunset. Would definitely go back.

Valley of Fire West is in a great location with services only 7 miles away at the Moapa Paiute Travel Plaza (including gas, diesel, propane, restaurant, showers, convenience store, slot machines, fireworks). Only 4 miles up the road in the other direction is the amazing Valley of Fire State Park ($10 per carload, with RV dump and potable water available). The entrance to VoF West is located shortly after mile marker 6 coming from Moapa Paiute, and is a gravel drive marked by a few white boulders and small stacked stones.
Our two big rigs had lots of choices of sites to fit into together, and a number of other trailers, 5vers, skoolies, vans, and car campers came and went in the five nights that we stayed.
There is plenty of room for everybody! There were a lot of stone firepits indicating sites, and quite a bit of crushed glass in the gravel, but not a lot of trash. (Thanks to one of the campers who collected trash every day!) The nights are dark and quiet. I saw lizards, rabbits, and something small and furry that I couldn't identify.
The drive into Vegas isn't bad at around 40 minutes (unless you forget about rush hour.) This is a great place to boondock for an extended stay, near the conveniences of civilization.

The area looks like it was once a mine or quarry - there are piles of rock and graded areas. Easy to navigate, just keep an extra close eye on your surroundings if you arrive after dark. We almost went over the edge of a randomly placed concrete embankment because we were more focused on looking for a level spot than watching for manmade hazards.
It was a quiet night save for the fireworks being let off near the interstate exit seven miles away. AT&T service was a speedy 29 mbps/down, 7 mpbs/up.

Either way lots of level area, amazing views in the AM and not too cold. I think it didn’t drop below 40 in Mid February. I think we found our new favorite layover spot near Vegas!

We were headed from Las Vegas (really Joshua Tree) to Zion and needed a layover. We found this spot on freecampsites and liked that it was close to the highway and access from the road seemed easy-ish, especially as we were coming in after dark. Just as advertised this is a wide and not too rough road with campsites marked by fire rings. (Though you could probably pull over anywhere if you were just staying the night.) there were a few sips in the road behind our site but plenty of room on our side. There was one other RV there. We woke to beautiful desert views and could have stayed the day if we weren't eager to get to Zion. Would be easy to explore Valley of Fire from here or just catch up on rest\admin. There is a gas station market right off the highway if you are desperate for supplies. Our overall five star rating should be viewed in the context that it met our needs exactly + the obvious $ value of BLM land.
