Arriving early on a weekday (Monday - Thursday) should be OK. Also keep an eye on the weather. Rain can frequently cause road closures in Death Valley.

Really easy with good timing. Go mid-week, non holiday time and no weekends. Spend the night someplace else close by, and arrive early 10-11 am, just when others are checking out. It was amazing to us how many people only stay 1 night and then move on. Nicest campsites are around the perimeter of the campground

Certainly doable. We arrived around noon, I believe, and there were several spots open. However, by the end of the day, most if not all spots were filled.
