The trails offer a history of commerce and travel in the 1860’s. The stagecoach road trail goes by an 1860’s cemetery Which is all that’s left of Columbus a bustling town of 500 souls that catered to the stage and horse traffic to the steamships that landed here . The earthworks trail goes through a civil war fortification to the ferry landing and remains of a steamboat engine. From there you see the railroad trestle that was the next big thing. Lime sink trail has a bridge over a beautiful spring fed pond. I haven’t tried the Big oak trail. Supposed to be a huge tree. Long way from town but it’s really clean. Even has a washer and dryer.

Cool state park, but tight roads and low hanging branches. Lots of nice trails and of course the Suwannee river. Friendly staff. Beware, if your GPS tells you to take Myrrh St for any reason, STOP. The park entrance is directly on Highway 90.

Pulling into the state park from off Highway 90 we immediately noticed only one bar of AT&T cell service. But the day was cloudy and cold and turns out our site #14 actually had two bars which is suitable for online computer work and streaming of our television in the evening for our news. The park is immaculate with pine straw covering most of the campground. The restroom and showers are new and there is both a washer and dryer on site. There appears to be only thirty campsites so we expect this campground would have to be reserved early for any extended stay. Our two nights here were meant for exploration and enough exposure to the area for future reference. We love it. The trails are numerous, beautiful, and sandy. Plenty of blacktop road and even an old two-track sand stagecoach trail to ride our bicycles on and to run Bob the dog hard.
Bob and I took off for a quick ride after setting up camp, parking the bike near the canoe and kayak launch, and hiking north upriver on the Suwannee River Trail along the banks of this wide and high river due to all the recent rains. We continued on for probably another mile along the connecting Balanced Rock Trail before turning back to explore the Earthworks Trail downriver. We happily reported to Beverly what we had discovered and what was in store for the next day’s activities for both riding and hiking.
Our one full day began with me driving very early in the morning forty minutes to a Toyota dealership in Lake City for our required Tacoma maintenance. I was hoping to get this done sometime next week but the warning light came on and I do not procrastinate. Interesting that I have not used the same Toyota dealership twice for an oil change yet since we’ve owned the Tacoma. Due to our travels we generally get the maintenance done when it is called for wherever we are. Seems Toyota has enough dealerships around the country to service our needs. One thing I have found to be true of every one of them is their professionalism, cleanliness, attention to detail, and quality service.
I got back to camp around 10AM, found Beverly and Bob the dog down by the river, and we hit the hiking trails immediately. First we walked .7 mile upriver on the Suwannee River Trail connecting to the Balanced Rock Trail which is a 3 mile loop. Before finishing the trail we cut over to the outside loop of the Lime Sink Run Trail ¾ mile and back to camp. In the afternoon we rode our bicycles to the beginning of the Sandhill Trail loop and hiked the .6 mile loop which had an old cemetery on it. Returning we followed the Earthworks Trail to the railroad bridge and again hiked a bit more upriver on the Suwannee. To insure Bob the dog would be good and tired we ran him hard on the old Stagecoach Road out to the youth camp and back. All in all a very good sunny day for exercise and breathing fresh air.
The showers in the new restrooms of the Suwannee River State Park are plenty hot and the water pressure better than most state parks. But bring your groceries in with you as the park is pretty much off the beaten path. There are no stores around for many miles.

We have a 21ft Kodiak TT with slides on both sides and I just don’t think it would have worked in site 11. Overall, a great campground! Very clean facilities. Very nice ranger station (although it isn’t always staffed). The convenience store (Jay Veer?) is just up the street in case you need ice and supplies. Just be prepared that it isn’t very clean and princes are high.
We did a lot of biking on the trails - You will definitely need a mountain bike on the Balanced Rock trail. Make sure you bike out to the abandoned bridge off highway 90! You can take the back way off the mound trail, cross the railroad tracks then head past two old houses to 90.
Just from my observations from walking the campground: The sits near the entrance (1-20) seemed a little narrow to me. Sites 16/17 would be least desirable to me since there really is no separation between the sites. Also, be aware that the sewer hookups are elevated and placed near the fron the site so longer hoses may be necessary.
All in all, a great little campground!

Full hook-ups but the sewer was too far in the front of the site to be hooked up while parked in the site. The bathrooms were very clean and it was convenient that there was a family restroom as well. We really enjoyed the hiking trails along the river here. What a beautiful part of FL!

We really enjoyed our stay here. Check-in is 3:00. We arrived around noontime (we always seem to be early). The park ranger wasn't in the office yet and there was someone still in the spot we reserved as check-out is 1:00. There is an open area where you can wait down by the dumpster. The work campers do clean the sites, so if you set up right after someone leaves the work campers won't get a chance to clean. This didn't bother us and the site was clean anyways. We would definitely recommend site 15. It is on a corner and offers a little more privacy than some of the other sites. The site is also larger, pretty level and easier to back in with a larger rig. We noticed some of the other sites near us were tight and small. With the trees it makes it difficult to back in (as we noticed with other people backing in to their sites). The road is paved but is narrow. It was very quiet during the week and around Thursday and into the weekend it would get a lot busier. Overall it was very peaceful here. We stayed here the end of January.
The cell coverage was very good. With the cell booster we had 3 bars of 4G (Verizon). We had no issues at all working during our stay here.
There are 6 trails here for biking and walking. The majority are under a mile, one 3 mile trail and the longest trail is 12.5 miles. There is a dumpster here within the park that is emptied often. Amenities are 20 minutes away. There is a Publix which we loved and there is a Laundromat on the way into town. There is also a Wal-Mart in town. There is a train that you hear a few times during the day and during the night, but it didn't bother us. We laughed as it seems like every place we have been staying at lately has a train nearby, maybe we are just used to it now.
We were definitely entertained by the squirrels here. They were not phased by us at all and seemed to be a little crazier when the park wasn't crowded. We had one try to climb up our screen door and another one that was hanging from our awning. We just kept an eye on them....they were pretty harmless.
This is another great Florida State Park and we would definitely stay here again. We actually were wishing that we could have stayed more than the 14 day max even with the crazy squirrels.

Short hiking trails along the Suwannee River and a full boat ramp for the same. If full, a better spot is Stephen Foster Historical SP that is just a few miles away. Both convenient to the interstate. We live near Mobile, AL and have marked this as a stop over site on our way to the Atlantic coast.

The hook-ups for our particular site were placed a bit oddly (sewer toward the front of the site), but nothing too terrible. For the price, we weren't complaining. The rangers at the Florida Parks are always very kind and helpful and the camp hosts were great as well.
The only downside is, there's not much to do around there. The river runs through the park, so if you have kayaks, it's great. The park doesn't rent them though, so you have to go to a private company, and we had problems getting in touch with them (it was their low season). It would be great if the park rented some of this stuff.
The hiking trails are well maintained and we enjoyed checking the park out. But other than the park itself, there's not much around. It's a real small town in the middle of nowhere. So, if you're on I-10 and you want to stop for a couple days to take a break, it's a great choice. But I wouldn't generally make it a destination.
