As we drove in on the 3+ miles of gravel road, we thought we had made a mistake, but when we got to our site (10 - last one - pull thru) we couldn’t have been happier. This is dry camping & we have a suitcase solar panel, but only fired up the generator once. The lake is very active w/ fisherman, but you really don’t notice it unless you want to. It is a peaceful place. But the best part were the sunsets! No amenities, (I don’t consider vault toilets an anemic) unless you go to the Carpios Ridge campground across the way. Don’t forget to check out the town of Trinidad.
Pat would stay here again

This place has a lot going for it: a Camp located above a beautiful, serene lake with ample opportunities for hiking, views of mountains near and far, with only a few (10) sites at the location. However, there is a reason this particular camp has apparently not been reviewed until now. That is because to get to the camp you will be required to drive over the most unbelievably god-awful rough road that you are going to wonder if your rig will start to shed parts and your fillings fall out. I was totally unprepared for that, as apparently most other campers we saw - 90% of whom turned around once they got to the camp, and immediately split. Had we known that on just the other side of the lake at the Carpios Campground on the north shore, a totally ‘civilized’ alternative awaited - with paved roads, showers, laundry, and a Dump Station - we never would have subjected ourselves to this. The odd thing is, to the eye, the gravel road does not look rough at all. However, trust me, you do not want to put your rig through this torture chamber. The only comparable experience we have had in terms of ‘rough roads’ was in Quartzite, but this was worse. Far worse. In addition, $18 for ‘dry camping’ is bad enough. Add another $7 for a ‘Day Use Fee’ and it is pretty outrageous. We opted to get an Annual Colorado Camping Pass, which enabled us to get a refund for the Daily Use charges, but clearly, there is some price gouging going on here. Bottom Line: Planning a stay at Trinidad Lake? Stay at the Carpios Campground, not at the South Shore.
