“The triumph of nature sounds”

Do you like camping, but wish that the sounds of nature could be replaced by the sounds of some guy running a loud generator all day at his camper? Is it your deepest wish that God's green earth sounded more like a construction site? Then this is the place to be.
I couldn't imagine having to listen to the wind rustling through the forest all day, or hear birds singing, or even hear my family without all of us having to raise our voices to the level of near-shouting. Thanks to the generator motor of some random person who wants to sit in his air-conditioned camper all day (and late into the night), I didn't need to worry about my ears being assaulted by the usual cacaphony of tranquil nature sounds or other human beings enjoying themselves. Camping is about cooking your delicious rustic dinner while speaking at a near-shouting level because one dude clear across the camp decided that he has more of a right to air conditioning than everyone else has any right to malcontented desires like "hearing stuff that isn't a generator and/or compressor".
I have finally found my happy place where I'm freed from the auditory tyranny of relaxing natural sounds, and can instead enjoy the dulcet notes of loud motors that one normally associates with road crews building another six lanes of freeway. And why say things just *once* to the person sitting next to me, when can I have the non-option of increased frustration as we repeatedly say "WHAT" to each other after almost catching the words that the other person said?
A lot of communal camping locations ban motors aside from the vehicles used to get there, but South Shore swims against the current and allows campers to drown out anything that might near a resemblance to anything other than the constant droning of an unmuffled combustion engine.

Nice sites, very nice tables. Nice lake view. Great price! Would definitely stay here again. Weekenders are always loud during the summer, but what can you do? At least the sites aren’t super close together.
Att worked sometimes, but very slow speeds.

Carter Lake is a boating lake, and it was heavily used by families during the two days in June when we were here. The sites in the South Shore Campground were incredibly tight, and ours faced into a central play area that was full of screaming kids most of the time. Even during Covid, families let their children run around and play with other kids, and did not teach them about providing any social distancing. I would say this is a fabulous place to bring kids but not so fabulous for retirees looking for a nice lakeside spot.
The one-way loop goes the wrong way for the sites on the inside, so the utilities would be on the wrong side of the trailer and the trailer would open directly onto the road. We had to come in against the one-way to get set up properly. There are very large rocks ringing the tight pull-through, so very careful driving and parking is necessary. There was no way whatsoever we could have done it with our neighbor's car there, so we had to ask them to move it while we parked.
In spite of a pretty expensive nightly fee ($42), there was an additional $9 a day user fee. So this ended up being one of our most expensive and least liked campgrounds during our month-long trip.
Occasionally, we had 1 bar of 4G on Verizon, but mostly no cell reception.

Stayed two nights, we had a clean camp sight and friendly camp hosts, there is a path that connects to the sun dance trail and is a great walk for all ages.
Elk walked around in the camp both of the days we stayed and made for the best entertainment. There is a small store and restaurant on the north end of the lake for forgotten supply’s. Book ahead fills up fast in the summer weekends. Can’t wait to camp again at south shore.

It is a little out of the way for nearby towns, and cell service for Verizon was very poor. I was able to send texts at times, but others it had no service at all. Some campsites are lake front. There is access to swim, but the camp host warned us of fish hooks in the area. There was a mix of tent and campers, which seemed to add to the noise level, although it wasn't bad. We enjoyed a walk along the lake, and saw bike riders every day. While there, we also drove to Estes Park (only 22 miles from Hwy 34), which was about an hour drive due to the curvy, uphill, mountainous terrain. I would not recommend towing your camper there, but it was worth the drive.

I stayed at the South Shore campground at Carter Lake in May and it was great. The sites are large and very well kept, several of them are waterfront, all have electricity. The lake is really beautiful. There is a place to put in your boat, kayak or paddle board right at the campground. There are also hiking trails that go along the entire west side of the lake that start at the campground. This is a big road cycling area so bring your bike!
It would be a great place to come and just hang out for a few days. It is a little out of town so be prepared to drive for at least 15 minutes to get into Loveland (30 mins to Ft Collins and 1 hour to downtown Denver). Cell service at the south shore was really poor. I was able to send texts but not much else. I'm sure a booster would do wonders here.
Note that the campground cost does not include access to the park, which is $7 per day or $95 per year. The annual pass gets you into several Larimer County parks and wilderness areas.
