We discovered this spot on a beautiful Saturday in late April, quite by accident. A small sign at the junction of NF18 and NF22 east of La Pine pointed to South Ice Cave, 1 mile west on NF22.
Even though this small spot isn't explicitly identified for camping, the presence of a pit toilet, fire ring and picnic table invited us to stay the night. An old zigzag split rail fence encircled the shallow, below-ground ice cave, which is encrusted with jagged lava rocks. A single Ponderosa pine stands guard at the entrance.
Our site was about 100 feet off north of NF22, but not a single vehicle drove by from 5 pm to 8 am when we departed.
Lots of other small-scale but fascinating adventures are nearby: Fort Rock, Crack in the Ground, Hole in the Ground, Derrick Ice Cave that could keep you occupied for a weekend.
Small dings for age of vault toilet and a picnic table on its last legs. There's plenty of room for all sorts of size rigs. We had no cell reception on our Verizon phones.
Chris&David would stay here again
