There is a lot to do here for families or just an old couple looking to relax. Great place to beat the summer heat. Easy access to the beach, or head down to the old waterfront section of Newport just a few miles away. Take a ten mile scenic drive up the coast on Hwy 101 to Depoe Bay, The Devil’s Punchbowl, or visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The coastal breeze and sometimes foggy mist will keep you cool but not freeze you out either. (Summer) The harbor Buoys will serenade you all night long.
The park itself is massive, clean, and busy. No real privacy here between campsites. Great bike trails, playgrounds, and frisbee golf. Showers were clean and never cold but not piping hot either. Lots of typical family noise but still peaceful. Occasionally small airplanes fly low on the way to the airport not far away.
Internet was solid for video streaming.

Beach access is a bit of a walk from the campground, don't expect to drive or bike to it (half the way is in the forest, the other half is grassy dunes). A benefit is that the beach isn't very busy since it's a little harder to get to. Which is sometimes not the case for other beaches in Newport.
Do note: the foghorn is constant, loud, and very audible from the campground. Granted, we are in a popup so basically a tent. I highly recommend ear plugs and some kind of white noise. I was *almost* used to it after four days but also not really.

Looking for a little peace? Head straight to the G Loop in the back of the park. Have littles along? There is a great playground, simply choose your site in the loop which backs to the playground. On a bike tour? Yep, there's a loop for tents only. There's something for everyone here at South Beach. Sites are large and provide enough space between you and your neighbors. There is also an activities yurt you'll want to check out. A couple of paths right at the park will bring you down to the beach or to Cooper Ridge, a nice hike around the park.
Staying connected was a breeze. Newport's Historic Waterfront, a five-minute drive from the park across the Yaquina Bridge was a mix of boats selling today's catch, candy stores, Mo's Clam Chowder (just ok) and a Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum.
We visited in mid-May. I bet this park is full from mid-June through the summer months.

This is right off a busy section of road with endless lines of cars going in both directions. It takes awhile to get in and out. Our site was on the main campground road so it was noisy with diesel trucks going back and forth. We did have a pretty private site with hedges and bushes on each side. Most of the sites don’t have foliage, especially the ones in the middle loops. The place is very family oriented with a big playground. There are alot of park hosts but the booth is unmanned. We’ve seen this at other Oregon state parks as well. If you have a reservation, check the list posted or just go to your site which has your name on it. There are 3 paths to the beach from the campground, but beware, they are full of mosquitoes, as was our site. You might trade lack of privacy in the middle loops for fewer mosquitoes. The location is good for exploring the area. Cell service is very good.

We have a 35' 5th wheel and the neighbors across the way had to move their truck so we could get in. Not a very wide roadway.

There are lots of trails from the campground, many of which are paved. There’s even a boardwalk area to the dunes overlooking the ocean with interpretative signs and interesting info. In the area most stuff is Covid closed, but in normal times Newport has a lot to see.
Our section of the campground was quiet, even though it was very full. Mainly saw travel trailers. Some sections would be tight turns for larger units. I don’t remember seeing any pull through sites. Decent Verizon cell/data coverage.

Pros
lots of sites so likely you can find a site
beach is nice if weather is nice
close to town
they sell ice, firewood
Cons:
Kids playground closed
Baths and showers closed
Long dumps station lines because they only have one dump station (sites do not have sewer)
(If you are taking longer then 5 minutes at the dump station, you are doing it wrong.)
Warning horn from the jetty all night long
Sites don't drain well if it rains hard

Plus, there is a 24-hour warning sound from the jetty that will disturb light sleepers! If staying here, definitely go for one of the outside spots, which offer more space and privacy.

Other than those negative items, it's a very nice state park. It's close to civilization so the phone service is pretty good. (Could be considered a negative for some) It's a good size park, lots of room for the kids to ride their bikes around. The playground is kept up nicely. Lots of well kept fields for tossing the ball around as well. We had a large spot in the "D" loop, which is a plus for us. Lots of trees for shade and breaking up the wind.
We will return here.

If you want to be on the beach in Oregon, this is as good as it gets. We could walk from our site to the ocean in about 10 minutes. The park is located just over the Yaquina Bridge from the downtown area, and the Yaquina Outstanding Natural Area is about 20 minutes away. The park's location is fantastic.
Because this was a state park, we had more space than we would have had at a commercial park, however, we still felt pretty close to our neighbors. There was a ton of greenery which helped a lot. We just wish the spaces were a bit bigger.
Otherwise, sites were mostly level, though some were better than others. The park only offers water/electric, but there are helpful gray water dump stations throughout the campground, so if you have a plastic bin you can put in your sink, you can collect your dish water and dump it at the stations, saving precious gray tank space. The main dump station is severely lacking in that there is only one dump station for well over 100 campsites. This is simply not enough. We lucked out with just a short 20 minute wait, but we can imagine how bad it would be on a weekend. The roads are reasonable, but tight. Like everything in the campground, they just seem overly busy and compact.
Overall, while we liked this park, it wasn't our favorite. It just felt too busy and compact. The neighbors were a bit close, the roads were a bit narrow, the dump station was insufficient, etc. We loved the park's location for exploring the nearby area, and we would certainly stay here again, but when comparing it to other state parks we've visited around the country, it didn't rank particularly high.
