We stayed here over Labor Day Weekend. This site does not accept reservations and we arrived around 2pm on Friday. There were very few sites left and we did get one of the sites at the entrance of the campground, which are the least desirable. This is due to the massive amount of trees that have been cut down due to the bark beetle. The ranger said they have cut down tens of thousands of trees just in this small area. That being said, if you get there early in the week, you can get one of the premium sites near the river.
The sites next to the creek are camp heaven. Tons of trees, huge, huge sites, and you get to listen to the sound of the river. I'm sure there are more mosquitoes in those sites, but totally worth it. Also, you are far away from the highway, which normally shouldn't be that big of a deal, but really sucked on Labor Day weekend. Seriously - there was a steady stream of desperate people coming through all night trying to find a camp site.
This is one of the few sites at the very end of Kings Highway (180). It is a good 60-90 drive down a steep canyon. You are rewarded at the end. The hiking is amazing.
Bring your screened in patio for the picnic table. We had tons of sweat bees that came out when we started cooking meat or eggs. We ate all our meals in our tent because we didn't have one - like many smart campers did. If you are close to the river, you will need this for the mosquitoes.
The only reason this place didn't get 5 stars is because the bathrooms were a mess and frequently out of toilet paper. I'm sure this was due to the massive crowds. Still - I'm not sure why they even let that many cars in at all hours of the night when the campsites were all filled up by Friday afternoon.
There is NO cell service here. We have Verizon and T-Mobile, but this place is so remote that no one would have service.
CindyG would stay here again
