Good free campground with shaded picnic tables and trash cans at established sites on the left; dumpsters, and restrooms near the entrance. The road coming in has a about a 40-foot area with ridiculous pot-holes, but the rest of the road is fine. First time I camped here in 2021, I parked on the dirt road right by the lake. A lot of other campers over here. Great views, but it rained overnight, and the dirt turned into the slipperiest mud I've ever experienced. You could barely walk on it, and forget trying to drive through it without 4WD. My 2WD van got stuck and required a tow. I watched as even 4WD trucks struggled to get free. In 2022, I picked one of the established campsites off the other side of the road instead. The surface is better here, and I have no doubt they'd fare a lot better in the rain.
Verizon fair to poor.
AT&T fair to good.

It was a short drive to Cowboy BBQ, and on the way back we saw that there were at least three additional campers at the park. Quiet night, no drive throughs, no nearby train crossings. WiFi was acceptable (Verizon).
Sunrise was beautiful and quiet. One fisherman arrived at Dawn and if I wasn’t watching the sunrise, I never would have heard him. Nice place to park for an evening. No litter, no liquor bottles, no shenanigans. The potholes on the approach aren’t as large as described. Baby potholes that will grow up to live on I70 or Chicago.

Very nice place for a night or 2, no problem using a generator in one of the back sites. Road into the park itself is chock full of potholes, Texas sized👀👀. The photo from the website is the front part and very open.

Beautiful spot next to lake. Lots of nice spots (just don’t park on grass). Good for any size rig & lots of easy turn around spots. The boat ramp got used a lot and a decent amount of car traffic (not sure why). Felt safe though. Good cell service (2-3 bars but good enough). Lots of trash cans, although lots of trash on the ground.

There are no site #s, just park near fire grate or trace of road.
A lot of water birds and only 3 units on Saturday.

We stopped here for a quick overnight snooze. This site was so pretty and spacious. The road was very good and the site was level and secluded. There were a couple of other RVs in the adjacent sites, but we didn’t even notice them. The next morning we woke up to a beautiful lake view! We would definitely stay here again.

What a great find! First, I stopped at a small rest stop on the way to Abilene. I read about the reviews for this free overnight camping site. I was reluctant to do to the fact that there are only three spots available. I decided to head that way just to check it out. So glad I did! It’s only A couple of miles north of I 20. The roads are very good. The campsites are spread out each with a picnic table and trashcan. There’s a public restroom but it was locked. My Verizon signal was strong enough to stream TV. The park is well-maintained and very quiet. I arrived around 4 PM only to find one other camper there. A sign says to camp only in designated areas… But there are probably more campsites than the three I mentioned.

Called ahead just to double check. They let us know primitive camping only. We prefer to boondock so perfect couple days as we take our time going west. They also let us know that up the road at Johnson Park there are no designated spots to park an RV but could use one of the parking spaces. Time limit is 48 hours.
