This is an unusual state park in that it was formed around a single point of interest: a geological formation called the Mound. And it's very interesting because of its history. And take 303 well designed steps to the top, and you're rewarded with a terrific view of 20 miles just about all the way around.
You will like this park if:
- You like a small campground with only 4 electrical sites. Great for rustic and tent campers. Some sites still had rigs that were boondocking.
- You want to visit the Dells but still want peace and quiet. Wisconsin Dells is less than 30 minutes to the south. This is a cheap place to stay but still close enough to spend your action filled days at the waterparks.
- You like easy to walk trails. There's a well marked nature trail. You can walk all of the trails within the park in just a few hours.
- You're a geologist or paleontologist. This is your place.
- You're a weekend warrior just getting away for a couple of days of campfires and s'mores.
You will not like this park if:
- You like amenities, like a concession building, or a lake with a dock (though Castle Rock Lake is a short distance away).
- You like showers. There's no shower building. Or flush toilets.
- You're a workamper. You'll need a signal booster.
- You have kids. Unless you're here to visit the Dells.
- You want to stay for more than a couple of nights.
This is an old park begging for redevelopment. The sanitary dump, aside from having a tank far too small to hold much waste (we had to drive down to Rocky Arbor SP to dump), was a very tight 180 degree turn to get into on the way out. What buildings that are there are very old. The park office is basically a shack.
richmanwisco would stay here again

When we pulled in to the one-way the campsite gate was open. Driving through there was only a handful of campers which was nice. Then we got to the locked gate at the other end. We had to carefully back around until we found a spot we could turn around in. Then go down back down hoping we didn’t run into anyone coming in. Luckily we did and found a level spot. Because the office was closed we tried making a reservation online since the site said they could be made for the same day. The website is a mess. Every time I tried to make a reservation it kept telling me that something went wrong and try again. After about ten minutes I said screw it and resolved myself to paying any extra charges for not paying online if I had to.
Haven’t been to the restrooms yet and after all the hassle I’ve been through already, I think I’ll just use the camper tonight.
