This was an overnight stope enroute to Waco, TX. Stayed on Sunday and it was very quiet. No one close by, but it's probably a different story on weekends and holidays.
There is a reservation system and you have the ability to pre-register your vehicle and trailer. Once you get to the park, all you need to do is get your parking passes for your vehicle and trailer. The nightly fee is $15 per night, but be aware that they also add a $4 per person per night entry fee. Hookups are electricity (50 amp), and water. Sewer dump is close to entrance of the park.
Site #12 is 60 ft total driveway length, so each site in the reservation system is for total length of your trailer and vehicle(s). The day we stayed, it was very windy with clouds of dust. Might be a common occurrence here. Sand is everywhere. You can rent discs at the visitor center to ride the dunes; or you can hike the dunes. The dunes is a massive expanse of sand so be sure you are aware of your surroundings and know how to navigate your way back to your campsite.
Overall, a pleasant overnight stay. Anything longer than overnight is "iffy" in my opinion, since there are limited attractions in the area.

We missed White Sands due to the government shut down, so we made an effort to put this on our travel route! So glad we did! We stayed two nights, which was sufficient. It was the perfect amount of time to sit and relax, go out in the dunes and explore, and enjoy the nice weather. We were able to get in without reservations, but it was pretty full. I think we would make reservations slightly in advance next time. However somehow we ended up with the best spot in the park! Site 10 is bellied right up to the side of the dunes! Our only wish is that there is more to do in the immediate area. We would have stayed longer if there were a few things to do within a 20 minute radius. However we did get laundry done close by! Fair warning, the cell/reception reception was only available at the top of a dune. We were not able to get anything throughout the park otherwise.

The website says $15/night. Don't be fooled: there's a "utility" fee, and you also have to pay the day use fee on top of camping. 2 days = $60.
It's a lovely spot, though, and there's nowhere else on this lonely highway.

downside! if you go in summer, it'll be 110. Keep this in mind. Dog feet will toast. You a/c will not keep up. But if you're wanting to spend a while and hike, go in the fall/spring. Simply beautiful. And, you need a quiet overnight spot off I20 this is perfect. And, the sunsets are beautiful.
West of Midland/Odessa this is a great spot to take a break heading West. The next state park west is Balmorhea.

This place is a gem. I recently spent a night here on the way to and from an event in Marfa.
My first night, I arrived just as the ranger was getting ready to leave for the day but he stopped and took the time to welcome me and even gave me the dollar that I was short for my fees!
When I told him would pay him back on my return trip, he responded saying "just make a donation to the park." It was clear he loved his job and the park.
Sites were first come first serve and I found good spots both nights. There were very few people in the park and everyone was very friendly, waving and smiling as folks walked by their sites.
Bathrooms were clean and dumpster, tidy and accessible.
The only negative to report on this trip was the rude young man in the park office gift shop. I went in to purchase souvenirs with my small, well behaved dog tucked under my arm. The young mans handling of this situation was out of proportion. A simple and polite please take the dog outside would have done the trick. He made it a power play and insulted me in front of another customer. It was an unfortunate and unnecessary departure from and otherwise wonderful experience.
I want to end this on a positive note, so I'd like to reiterate that the ranger I met on my first night made me feel welcome and gave an air of great respect for his park. My next trip to Monahans will be a destination, rather than an overnight stop. It's an otherworldly beautiful escape from the everyday.

They do have paved pads in the sites but around it is sand.
We camped right in the dunes and it was a quick walk and we were surrounded by the dunes and sledding down on our sleds. It was not crowded when we were there.

Great camping among the sand dunes. This campground has wide level campsites and restrooms with lots of hot water. The sand doesn't appear to stick to clothes or skin too bad. You can climb the sand dunes and slide down like skiing on sand. Great place for kids and pets. Poor phone coverage so be prepared to be off the grid.
