I pushed on the gravel road for about 11 miles and found a free spot right on the rim. There were 3 sites but only the middle one had some tree coverage. And man, do you need it! I pushed on the gravel road for about 11 miles and found a free spot right on the rim. There were 3 sites but only the middle one had some tree coverage. And man, do you need it! The wind for 3 days straight was blowing at 20 mph with gusts way higher. I had to put heavy rocks on my tent stakes. It was brutal. The pluses: the view of course, the peace and quietness from people and their generators, the solar supply for my panels (running a fridge etc...), AND....a Verizon signal on and off. Sometimes nothing, sometimes 3 bars!
The minuses: the WIND, the occasional dust storm from a speedy vehicle on the dirt road (300), and the WIND!!!
Kehl Springs campground is very nice. Among the trees, it is very green. The host was super super friendly and the bathroom was immaculate. Yet, zero cell signal, neighbors with generators and zero sun exposure for recharging your batteries with panels.

If you don’t mind the nine miles of gravel road and the constant wind this is a truly great spot! There are a number of camp spots along the Mogollon Rim Road but if you go a bit further than this GPS coordinate to the General Cook trail head you can find a spot right on the rim with sweeping vistas looking out onto the forest floor below. At 7500 feet the temps are 20-30 degrees cooler than elsewhere in AZ.
Verizon speeds were nice (15.8 downloads and 8.92 upload) and I could stream to my heart’s content, although I tried to enjoy being outside more than in.
Traffic out this way is almost non-existent but occasional ATVs racing by break the silence.
All worth it for the views and the sound of the wind in the trees.

Road is closed to allow land to recover. Watch for the very small brown signs along the rim Road. There are other offshoots that are closed as well. Signs aren’t obvious.

Absolutely beautiful!!! It’s free and on a first come. It’s also, down a few miles of dirt road.
