This is a hidden gem far from anywhere (40 miles east of I25 in the high prairie of Northeast New Mexico.) If you can make it, it's a great stay. But ... It's down seven miles of gravel road the last mile of which is rutted and very rough. In the campground itself there's only one pull-through site than can handle anything larger than a class C. Most of the campers we saw were either in tents or vans/conversions with a couple of small trailers. The seven-or-so developed campsites all have picnic tables and fire rings. Three have fenced and covered areas for horses. Most of the sites appeared to be mostly level. The good news is there are a couple of parking areas without any facilities that can handle bigger and/or more unwieldy rigs as well as over-flow camping. The nights we were there were busy with all the developed campsites occupied. The lower campground is down a steep, poorly developed road that's not for the faint of heart. It's not recommended for RVs, low-clearance vehicles or vehicles with trailers -- although we did see a small trailer and a van in the lower campground. It's not likely that you will visit this campground unless you make specific plans to do so and it's basically geared for lovers of the outdoors. if that's you, you'll love it.

Its surprisingly quiet with only a few guest coming to explore the Valley. Since My Trailer did not fit in the upper park I just pulled into the field before the camp gates. The actual park sites look nice and clean with a bathroom site and plenty of TP left by guest. The lower park sites are immaculate but very difficult to reach without the right Vehicle(4x4 or AWD recommended) the lower parts also have some amazing Views and old structures.
Pack plenty of water and if you have solar you will have plenty of open space to catch the rays.
Be mindful of snakes and Cactus if you have pets
!! If you have an RV or Travel trailer DO NOT go into the lower camp grounds. That road is tight and unsafe for long trailers. pop tops and vans may have an easier go.

As stated in other reviews, the last mile is very rough and rutted. We arrived on a Monday afternoon and there were two spots to choose from. We selected a site with a picnic table and campfire pit, as the other had a corral for horses. Our campsite's fire pit was full of aluminum cans but was otherwise free of trash. The site was fairly level and easy to navigate with our 17' Casita. The majority of the the sites were taken by bow hunting parties with larger rigs, trucks, and ATVs. Whereas the hunters were quiet and friendly, two of the rigs had generators and one had those obnoxious led lights strung around it. I enjoyed the remote location and the hiking. Amazingly we had full AT&T reception including LTE data. I'd stay again, but will check about hunting season next time. Also, there was a notice posed that as of 2022, there will be a $12/night camping fee.

I hiked to the rim of the canyon. Nice views.
Sunshine was weak. Not enough to fully charge my battery. Nights were cold but not too bad sleeping with comforter.

I'm giving it only three stars as a middle of the road as we didn't actually stay here. March 23rd arrived mid afternoon (2PM) to a campground loop completely full. Maybe it was a spring break weekend or event. Every license plate was from CO so I guess the word is out. Every site full. Only complaint is because I didn't get one. Large pull thrus taken up by a single person tent. Probably better mid-week. There had been a large storm a few days prior and the ground off the beaten path was quite soft so we opted to hit the road instead of trying to make a site off the access road. It's difficult to state what the rules are on dispersed camping as the webpage for the location doesn't state anything specifically. I'm sure it would be a wonderful camping experience.

I thought for sure I had missed the cost when I saw the level gravel sites, picnic tables, fire rings, and pit toilet. There is no water, electric or WiFi but it's free so what do you expect, but get this, there are two sites with fenced corrals for your horses. Don't miss the beautiful drive down to the canyon flood, just not in your RV. Saw 15 turkey, an owl, and a big elk as we were leaving. The road into the site is about 6 miles in but it is easy for any size rig and not at all washboard.

The road going in is gravel but very nice. Any size rig can drive it. The last mile to the campground was very bumpy. No pot holes or large bumps, just rattled everything.
