“Shady river-side campground by the Middle Fork of the John Day River”

Overall Rating

This campground offers lots of tall Ponderosa pines to take refuge under during the hot summer months. You'll need to keep a sharp lookout for the campground sign as it's much smaller than most BLM sites. It's along a highly scenic but sparsely populated (except by cows) stretch of Hwy 20 by the Middle Fork of the John Day River.

Sites are spaced generously along the river, and it's a little less picturesque than the nearby Deerhorn Forest Camp. It's a little more off the road than Deerhorn with less sun because of the trees.

There are two vault toilets for campers, one at either end. Well maintained and stocked.

No cell phone service at all in this neck of the woods! Plan accordingly.

A great side-trip from here is to drive 15 miles north to the Indian Rock Fire Lookout and the Vinegar Hill Scenic area, both north of this section of Hwy 20. . Amazing views from here as well as hiking. Lots of dispersed camping options all along Hwy 20 if you don't need the amenities found here at Middle Fork.
