Is it possible to go and reserve a spot and then come back in a few hours with my trailer?

Fast forward to 2018, do not drive this route holy cow talk about nail biting potholes and intermittent dirt roads. Apparently some of the roads washed away and rerouted. If you are coming from the North then drive from Ferndale to Petrolia. If you are coming from South go the extra drive North to Ferndale to Petrolia. Dont rely on google maps
This is a first come first serve beach campground. We arrived appx 2:30 on Friday and found no problem getting a spot. However later in the evening I think the campground was almost full. Backpackers like to park here for the hike into the Lost Coast.
Hiking to Punta Gorda Lighthouse like training for Navy Seals (ok exageration) but really sand walk 4 miles. We took the Windy Point Road back....dont do this unless you are prepared to climb a hill. Our roundtrip was probably 9 miles this route. Go back on the lost coast trail for easier hike. Elephant seals at the lighthouse!
Vault toilets and NO WATER. many folks showed up thinking there was running water, there was in 1997 when I was last here. We had to give 2 other campsite water because they were unprepared.
Aside from the pain, I find this place magical and rewarding and will return just look at my photos

DO NOT try to drive here from Garberville. The roads are treacherous and infinite. I thought I was going to die out there in the mountains.
No ocean view but you can walk to it and the roads in from any direction are horrible. Just not worth the drive.

This beach is the northern point of the popular Lost Coast through-hike, so there are lots of people coming and going, and leaving vehicles here for days at a time. For that reason, I would be cautious about theft.
There's no cell service here, and no hookups. Leveling is pretty okay, and there is a vault toilet that's not too deplorable in the parking lot. The road to get here is pretty rough, not suitable for large RVs, but small ones or towables should be fine. AWD recommended, but the parking lot has a bunch of smaller cars in it that obviously made it.

Mattole Beach Campground is not easy to get to. The drive is long from wherever you are coming from, but worth the trip if you are looking for a remote beach campground. Beach access is right there. The road into Mattole is narrow, one two lane, sometimes one, with grade both up and down. Every time I have been there they have been working on the road from winter damage. Groceries are at Petrolia. Small simple country store. Basics at best. But some very good local wine. Plan to arrive in daylight.
The campground is small, set up in a u-shape from the entry road. Larger units would not be able to make the turn. 25' limit is for a reason. Sites are fairly close together, only a few with vegetative cover. Mostly or easily leveled. Tables and fire rings. Water is available at various spots in the campground. 1 large, maintained pit toilet is in the overflow parking area. This parking lot is a drop off, pick up spot for backpackers and hikers going into the King wilderness, and there are always a few cars overnighted there.
Very quiet place each time I have been there which has been early spring or fall. Fog is predominant in this coastal area.
