I agree with all the positive points, but want to point out that Starlink worked better here than anywhere I’ve been because of clear views of the big sky. Sites are very well mowed grass. Bathrooms are vault outhouses, but shower building has individual shower rooms. Look at Google earth. Some of the sites back onto the gorgeous badlands, which as noted you can hike into from the campground. Not every site is for horse folk, although this park is perfect for them. The sites closest to the office are further from stalls. Pick your site carefully when you reserve. North Dakota charges five bucks to change sites, which is unique and bad at the same time! Shop in Kildeer for food before you get here, or somewhere else if coming from another direction. it’s happily by itself. If you’re planning to stay here to visit the south unit of TRNP, consider staying in the national park in Medora. For the north unit we’re moving today to Watford City as a base, but I’m so delighted we built a couple of days into the schedule for this beautiful spot.

Spent 7 days here to enjoy some badlands views and visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The campground is a simple equestrian based campground. Each site has two horse stalls. There is 20/30 amp electric at each site. Water spigots are spread throughout the campground. There is none at each site but is available. The pit toilets are super clean Ne there are pay showers available. 4 minutes for 50 cents and hot water. There are also several primitive tent sites available.
The park ranger does an excellent job of keeping everyone and their horses comfortable. She is quick to resolve personality conflicts with the horses. I highly recommend this campground if you have horses or not.
Very clean and within easy driving distance to Medora and Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
There are also miles of hiking and equestrian trails that spur from campground trailheads!
5 star campground!

We stayed in site #2 because of the shade that the trees offered. Sites 19-21 have the best views of the cannon, but in late July we opted for shade.
Cons: ND state parks charge a daily fee for vehicles, $7 per day or $35 annual and they have pay showers here, I would prefer that they just increase the daily rate and let the water be part of the fee. My husband has mobility issues and having to put quarters in to continue showering was not conducive for the handicapped accessible shower. I personally felt like I used more water than I normally would because I had to pay for it. This is specific to our situation, but others might find this information helpful. Showers are $1 for 10 minutes and $.50 for 4, they will give you change at the ranger station during business hours.

This is a quiet state park that takes some effort to get to. Worth it for us! It is a horse campground, although we don’t have horses. It was still fun to see them. Hiking right there from the campground, clean showers that cost a few quarters and for us, a gorgeous canyon view. We were in site 9, which was great. When someone was in 10 for a couple of the nights it was a little tight, but the sites are very long and kind of a free for all on the grass so it depends how you situate yourself. Only negative was ticks, so be aware and prepared.
