We stayed at a site near the entrance to petroglyph sites , great sunset , very quite at night , the road out was very rough for a minivan , at one point I thought Im gonna get stuck in sand. Oh one more thing , in the morning I noticed mysterious imprints of hands on car window..spirits of ancient inhabitants of this place?? ;-)

When we first got to this site we were very disappointed with how much trash there was everywhere. We decided to camp up on a bluff overlooking the lower area. After hauling away 3 full trash bags the camp was a whole lot more hospitable. The cell service here was excellent. We were also able to receive over 30 TV channels. This place is very popular with dirt bikers and ATVers so lots of noise all day and even through the night. It was nice to see lots of family groups staying here. Other folks pitched in and help clean up trash as well. So it ended up being a very nice place to stay. There's also a lot of folks who go out there to shoot guns as well. If you drive in past this Arizona State Trust Land to the BLM land to the South things are a whole lot cleaner and quieter but cell signal is harder to find. Also, if you stay in the Arizona State Trust Land part you will need to get a permit online. It costs $15 for the 14 day stay. There are white signs posted as you enter with QR codes on them for smartphone users.

Stayed here early May 2018 and may have driven too far with our C class but a great spot.
As you turn off the Southern Parkway at junction for BLM 1069& you enter Arizona near the airport. There are lots of people and the immediate area not very good unless you just want a quick overnight (lots of people driving fast and clouds of dust). Turn second left as you drive south where it is signposted for BLM Petroglph and once up the hil start looking for spots. It may be wise to check the condition of the hill as half way up i stopped and then walke dthe rest checking where to drive. We went about 3.5 miles from the highway and having climber the first hill we went down another one and then up a smaller hill. We then decided it was far enough as another mile to the petroglphs.
You will get quoite a lot of traffic people going to the petroglphs but night time clear starry skies and no one in site :)
Warning - a car knocked a hole in his sump when we were there (good to have a high clearance Class C compared to cars) and needed a tow truck which was very difficult to get The truck damaged the first hill we came up so check it first before proceeding to see how it is now. Also not not go that far if there has been lots of rain and muddy.
Also we heard a lot of shooting all day in the distance (this would have been if you had gone on past the BLM turnoff)
The actual Petroglph site not good for staying (uneven) unless a 4 x 4 and slightly away from it. lots of people coming from different directions and also a further hill to go down to get there. Checked the area on our 150cc scooter and there is no other way in suitable unless with 4x4.

Typical BLM no frills desert camping, but the backdrop was at times breathtaking depending on sun placement. Some great spots, far apart. Were visiting St. George ... Would stay again. As noted before, lots of thorns!

We were looking for a place to camp near St. George and because it was a weekend, everything else was full. We accessed the entrance to Black Mountain Petroglyph site from Southern Parkway.

Some of the unpaved roads at this AZ BLM property were okay, but many were poorly maintained. There were large rocks and potholes. We had a rental sedan with low clearance, so we set up camp at the first decent site. There are no "official" campsites, just areas used by previous visitors. Ours had a fire ring fashioned by previous campers, but there are no other amenities. No picnic tables, no water, no bathrooms.
The location is plain, but we had a lovely sunset. I probably would not return to this site, as it didn't have much else to offer.

“Not really suitable for anything but a jeep!”
noted 4/12/2023
We took our side by side out here. The road was rough, rutted, and soft in spots. We would not take our RV here and we are adventuresome!
No real pullouts or evidence of fire rings on the way there in either direction. At the actual site, there is a pit toilet, signage about the petroglyphs and a covered picnic table.
There were others out visiting this site in 4WD vehicles.
