Site was a bit muddy but beautiful! The creek ran right by us. It was conveniently off the paved road but still private!

I first tried to find these sites in the dark but wasn’t sure what I was looking for. I tried again in the morning & they were then super easy to spot and the road in was completely paved. I drive a chevy g20 & the spot I picked out, which was right along the river with a fire ring, could accommodate maybe a small sized rig or many cars for group camping. I had to drive down sherwin lake road a little past where the gps stopped, maybe a mile or 2, to find the site. No cell service. There were LOTS of butterflies which landed on me & let me pick them up & the creek is absolutely wonderful to fall asleep to. Not much traffic at all, maybe 15 cars drove by during my stay. I camp alone with my dog & besides her growling into the woods a handful of times I felt very safe. Would definitely come back here.

Temporarily closed? Visited the Lake Sherwood Road Dispersed Campsites in May 2020. There are at least a dozen free dispersed campsites along Lake Sherwood Road prior to entering the Lake Sherwood Recreation Area, Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia. There are several big rig friendly dispersed campsites. The best big rig friendly campsite is next to Meadow Creek and a water cascade. Grid coordinates for this big friendly campsite are provided in the video description; see video embedded here on Campendium.

Dispersed sites along the Sherwood road leading up to the campground. Most of them are right off the road, so if it's a busy time of the year, there might be a lot of road noise. Beautiful, though some of the sites were left with trash from jerkoffs.

The Sherwood Lake Road dispersed campsites are our favorite free spots to camp today's date. There are approximately 17 to 20 sites. Most sites could accommodate more than 1 tent & several are on large fields which would accommodate large groups that would like to camp together. The only time that we have seen it completely booked up solid has been during opening deer season. So stay away around Thanksgiving other than that we've always found a site the location is located on Meadow Creek so water for filtration is available as well as water for your shower or sponge bath. The stream is stocked with trout in the spring and when you go to the end of Sherwood Lake Road and enter into the National Park you have access to Sherwood Lake and that is amazing fishing bass, bluegill, musky, & catfish. There is trolling motor only boating allowed. No live minnows/shad allowed for lake fishing. There is a beautiful beach area with a large bathhouse and a little island in the middle of the lake that you can get on by boat. We actually stayed longer than 14 days ( 21 ) during off-season with Rangers permission.
Our FAVORITE place to camp in WV!!!
We have as also stayed in the paid camping too ;)
After 5 or 6pm there is no charge to enter the National Park and we used the bathhouse at that time for a real shower occasionally.
You will love any of these free sites!!!
Always leave NO trace!!!!
