Sites might be close in some areas, however the overall experience was great. Very clean facilities. Bathrooms very clean and friendly staff especially the younger part time staff. Our lot was a lakeside site with a buffer zone of trees. Wind was coming off the lake every evening which was nice during a hot day, cool at night but we like the breeze. Campground was never full the full time we were here, first week of August, in fact some sites looked like they were never used during the season as there was weeds growing in the fire pits. Could not get TV reception but we are camping eh? Ice and firewood available 5 bucks for wood 2 for ice pretty reasonable. Lake is known for Walleye fishing we did not bring the boat this time but probably will next time as a lot of walleye were being caught. We were sight seeing this time and there was plenty of waterfalls close by. Most all of the business establishments we went to were nice and the staff friendly. If you are using Goggle maps to navigate they seem to have missed the mark for the campground and most of the waterfalls. We believe this is the most under used state park in Michigan. Reservations are the best way to insure lakeside sites. Views are absolutely beautiful.Every night we were here was quiet and peaceful most every one was inside at 10 pm.

I feel this place may get crowded at times, though we did book this because Porcupine Mtn was booked. Its kind of random the way the power access is to different sites, so having a power extension will save you unless you have a class C that you can nose or back in. The park also has a boat ramp, large flat green space, grass volleyball court, a little beach, dump station, and kayak launches at most waterfront sites. Site 30 was great for us, but may not be for everyone. It butts up to the playground which was pretty popular, but made the closest neighbor outside our main windows (Drivers side when backed in) about 200' away, had a kayak launch cove, and trees on the shore line to hang the hammock. It does require 50' of power cable. The shower/bathrooms are on par with the other Michigan state parks, and has superb shower heads... We're talking real streams of water, not pins and needles that make you think twice about washing your face.
If you are exploring the Porcupine Mtn Wilderness it's about 40 mins to the main entrance (Near the ski area) and closer to the south west side of the park (known for the waterfall hikes).

We were there once at the fall bear season opener and it seems it takes an army of p/u trucks, guys with beards and Oshkosh overalls and lots of bear hounds. Noisy, but interesting at first. It seems to take lots of beer to bag a bear!
A little later during the week it was a delightful spot with just a few campers there. They told us it was a busy place on summer weekends. Where isn't it like that in a good recreation area?

My family recently camped at Lake Gogebic State Park. We had followed the firewood guidelines found in our campground registration paperwork. Upon entering the park, the student worker inspected our firewood and took some of it over to the Park Ranger. The Park Ranger issued us a Civil Infraction for bringing ash firewood into the park. When I showed him our camping registration paperwork (which DOES NOT state anything about bringing ask into the park) he stated that there was a sign by the road. The FIREWOOD section in our paperwork, in the campground brochure and the website make no mention of this rule. I am truly perplexed why they don't want to inform Upper Peninsula families about these rules. A $190 ticket is a huge deal to our family. We are good people and will follow the rules… we just need to know them! It definitely left me with a very shady impression of what is going on there and I would urge you to save your hard earned money and stay somewhere else. This fine was a significant hit to my family and we will never return to this campground or County. I would suggest you do the same.
