First of all, off of Rt 505 make sure you take the Lake 13 Rd. There is a big brown sign for Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge. Our GPS failed and took us down another smaller gravel road before. The site was grass and a good location for visits to Angel Fire/Eagles Nest/Taos (The Enchanted Circle) and Sugarite Canyon State Park. It was kind of windy at night when we were there. Very quiet and there are park rangers just down the road and patrol the area. We had an issue with large moths when we had to pull in our full wall slide in as the wind was flapping our slide topper pretty good.
The ranger asked us if he should make spots more defined and make them a back-in, as people were kind of taking up 2 potential spots a lot of the time. We said it would be good.
For data we used our AT&T Nighthawk with a weBoost and was running 55 mbs down 22 Up and iPhone X LTE 46/24.

Beautiful spot 10 minutes from the highway, only 3 or 4 spots available but it was empty in October. The lake was filled with hundreds of geese and migratory water birds which made horrifically loud honking noises all night long. Even with ear plugs and wind it was still loud. If they weren’t here this spot would be exponentially nicer.

We ended up staying the full three days there's trash and vault toilets. Roads were nice and graveled just washboard. Mountains are all around and a lake with birds are in front. The site is pretty much right when you pull in by the picnic tables we started to go around a and ended up backing up since we couldn't turn around.

We spent a night here as we travelled west. No one else was around when we stopped. Even though it’s pretty close to Maxwell it was very quiet.
Picnic tables and trash bins but no fires allowed. Beautiful views of the lake. Overall a great place to park.

Easy in and out. Any size rig can get in. Road is gravel and smooth. Great views of mountains in the distance. The morning was alive with waterfowl on the lake. I arrived around 3 and was the only one there. A few minutes later a 5th wheel arrived and this morning there was a van at the other end. No bugs as it was a bit breezy

AT&T cell service was excellent. 45Mbps DL/5 Mpbs UL with our mobile router (no booster)

There is a free three-day limit as it is a wildlife national refuge area. One site is under the trees but the rest of the sites are out in the open on a beautiful mowed grass plain. There were only a few picnic tables but I’m sure the area could hold many more people. While I was there getting relief from the heat at over 6000 feet, only one other camper. The first night I stayed under the trees right next to the water but moved out to the open field for my solar. I saw pelicans, geese, seagulls (and I can’t figure out why they were there as there is no ocean nearby), I think a swan, a deer and her fawn, a young but very large buck wandered through, some wild turkeys and a pretty good size jack rabbit. It was beautiful, quiet and very peaceful. The road around the lake goes in the halfway but easy bike riding. Fishing boats and a few fishing off the dam caught a few fish - don’t know what. I enjoyed my three days and would’ve stayed longer if permitted!

I just spent a day and a night. I was the only one here until about 4pm.
The road in was narrow but not rough with mild washboard.
There are two pit toilets available. But one was locked, and the other would not lock. Not a big deal for me.
I would have stayed longer except that I had to be somewhere on Saturday.
The ground is level enough for my Class C
I have Verizon and it was good in the morning but very spotty later in the day.

We didn’t know what to expect and when we arrived were very pleasantly surprised. The grass lawn was very well kept and the park very clean. Two other rigs onsite besides ours. Lake is beautiful and we were greeted by a friendly antelope!!
