Camping in the Kuaoakala Forest Reserve is allowed with a permit along the Kuaokala Trail. Four-wheel drive is needed to access this trail via the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station Road. The trail traverses a public hunting area, hikers should exercise caution by wearing wear bright colored clothing and staying on the trail. Camping is allowed anywhere within the trail corridor within 10 feet of the center of the trail, but camping at the trail shelters is preferred. Camping in Hawaii's Forest Reserves is usually in remote, mountainous locations providing a wilderness experience. Campsites are accessed by hiking and have few or no amenities.
