This state park has so many campsites that are clearly never used. It makes you wonder what it looked like once upon a time. We stayed here for a short weekend getaway and realized we had missed the mark on this one. This state park has so many campsites that are clearly never used. It makes you wonder what it looked like once upon a time. We stayed here for a short weekend getaway and realized we had missed the mark on this one. A few months later we tried Sardis lake again, this time at the oak grove coe campground .25 mile down the road. It made a world of difference. Oak grove has water front views and is more well maintained, closer to beach access, and closer to the boat launch. I see us trying Sardis again but we will probably use oak grove and not John W Kyle.

No one at check in. Just a number to call which was off the hook. Called MS state park main number for ranger number. No answer. Someone finally drove by and checked us in. Dump station padlocked- but there was an above ground white pipe we could use. Couldn’t find any bathrooms or showers that were not falling down and out of order. F... more
No one at check in. Just a number to call which was off the hook. Called MS state park main number for ranger number. No answer. Someone finally drove by and checked us in. Dump station padlocked- but there was an above ground white pipe we could use. Couldn’t find any bathrooms or showers that were not falling down and out of order. Flagged someone down and they shouted to just open the padlocked door. Most run down park we have ever stayed in. Gave up the second day as there was no way we were coming back. Stay away!!!

“Worst campground ”

Will not camp here again. Grass was not cut. Campsites are not kept up. Bath houses terrible. It’s sad that a state park is in this condition. Did not feel comfortable letting kids ride bikes or do any of the normal campground activities that we have enjoyed in other parks. Worst ever.

John W. Kyle State Park is located on scenic Sardis Reservoir just one hour from Memphis. The historic campus of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) is just 25 miles away, making John W. Kyle State Park the perfect spot to spend a football 🏈 weekend; although, we are not “Ole Miss” fans the town of Oxford was incredible to drive through before arriving at the campground. Next..First and foremost, finding this park was like finding a needle in a haystack. My navigation 🧭 system took me to the cabins at John W. Kyle State Park. Which is NOT anywhere near the camping ⛺️ area. If you cross the dam you have gone to far; albeit, the drive over the dam was impressive.
The majority of the camping area was destroyed by storms in 2020. Most of the camp sites were closed. My concern is the park appears to be in great need of TLC. The bathroom 🚽 were not clean and no hand soap 🧼. Really during a pandemic, no soap? We loved the site itself but spay down as the tick problem is very bad.
We have just finished over 12,000 miles camping across the USA. The Campendium App was a necessity in our journey across the country. Sardis lake is full of activities. The state park is on the lower lake, easy to get to and navigate within. Sardis lake is full of activities. The state park is on the lower lake, easy to get to and navigate within. Plenty of sites with full hookups, lots with water and electricity only, dump station is easy to get to and maintained properly, sites are extremely level, paved and in good repair. Only one bathhouse was working when we were there but we were in a full hookup site so we didn't use it anyway, coin operated laundry that would work for full timers just fine, ATT cell service was strong. Park rangers were super pleasant and seemed to take pride in the place, as I observed them trimming trees and picking up trash and such a number of times during our stay even when it was lightly raining/generally unpleasant weather. There is a lot of corps land and day use areas around to utilize as well. I rated it 4 stars due to some infrastructure in decline such as a large sinkhole in one part of the road and some bathhouses being out of order. Otherwise a great experience, will visit again for sure.

Bicycle-friendly humongous state park, very pretty lake, huge trees, abundant shade, shower rooms that work, plenty of hot water, two good bars of AT&T service, and all of it happening within our friendly South. The campground is six miles off the freeway and an easy blacktop road in. No official person on site to check-in with so I went ahead and set up camp. Later I rode my bicycle around the park until I found an official-looking person and sort of checked-in. Because we were only staying two nights the ranger didn’t even give me a pass for my truck. Our site #90 was full sun which is what we wanted and needed after sustaining so much rain and being threatened with tornadoes for almost an entire week in our travels. We do have a nice awning on the Ollie and we needed to get it aired out anyway. Sunshine and warm temperatures were a welcome change. There seems to be plenty of room between campsites, but our choice of lake view lot #90 was not only superb, but lucky. Full hookups with water, electric, and sewer. Much of the giant park needs maintenance and evidence abounds with disrepair. But it is a great park regardless. For one, a fisher person’s paradise. For us, a peaceful and beautiful place. We will definitely be back to visit the area again. About seventeen miles east is the small college town of Oxford where the literary histories of William Faulkner and Barry Hannah abide, not to mention Ole Miss and remnants from the Civil War.

We are just traveling through to get home. We came in late. We were able to get a full hook up spot which was great. We needed to reset our tanks and do some maintenance. We are just traveling through to get home. We came in late. We were able to get a full hook up spot which was great. We needed to reset our tanks and do some maintenance. Our site was level and included a picnic table and grill. Only one bath house was open. It is very tired and worn. This is a park with lots of trees. For us we like that! Our phone both AT&T and Verizon both bounced between one to two bars. Enough to check in with family and plan out our next day. It is a beautiful area.

We needed a full hookup site after dry camping for several days. It was kind of late when we pulled in. The site was level and had enough cell service to help us plan our next day. All but one bath house was closed. It was also not in the best condition. Most of the park has some shade with all the trees. Your site will have a picnic table and grill. Campfires are also permitted. By morning we could see better. The area is gorgeous with lots of boating and fishing. A weed wacker could really groom parts of this park up as well as redoing the bathrooms.

We camped here in September, 2016 in a 35 foot fifth wheel. We used it for our home base to attend a football game at Ole Miss in nearby Oxford.
Check in was quick and easy and the camp host friendly. Our site was a large back in with water and electric hookups, paved pad, a picnic table, grill and almost no shade. Most of the other sites in our loop had full hookups and shade.
We spent most of our time in Oxford so didn’t explore the park too much. I did use the laundry which was in an old building with a brand new Maytag washer and dryer. The bath houses were very old and in need of updating. The campground is located on Sardis Lake and there are picnic areas, playgrounds, a small laundry, and boat ramps in park.
