“FYI Dispersed Camping Allowed Only North Of Trailhead Parking”

Be advised that dispersed camping is only allowed north of the Mt Jefferson Trailhead Parking. The location of the trailhead parking area is shown on any map app, and it is very obvious as you pass it on the road. South of the trailhead parking area dispersed camping is prohibited. This delineation is seemingly arbitrary, and is not obviously and clearly noted really anywhere. The USFS could do better conveying this to campers, as I’m sure many are surprised when the knock on the door comes from a ranger, like we were.
For the legal areas north of the trailhead, there are arguably one to three spots large enough for anything larger than say an SUV or camper van. One spot is an obvious and quite large sand/gravel clearing (seen in multiple photos above for this area), and a couple more are borderline. We were in a truck/truck camper setup, so not a large rig, and there was little here that worked. This is an area mostly for someone tent camping out of a small car or motorcycle.

The road is all gravel not dirt as stated before. Very minimal washboarding going on in the road since its closed during the winter. One of the smoother gravel roads I've driven. I think a class A would have no problem making it to the open area. But if you take the road south it would be a problem as there is a switchback that is sharp and going up hill. One would probably bottom out. I had no problem driving the entirety in my F150 with a 27ft TT. See pictures for the available space in the open camping area. Surprisingly we had good 5G AT&T coverage. I got 8MBs down and not much for upload.

Beautiful area along the river. Very quiet!
Keep going past the pin drop and there are tons of pull offs with beautiful views.
Would not recommend taking a big rig up past the dropped pin though. Zero places to turn around!!!

Very quiet no Verizon service but ATT has 2-3 bars. Stay limited to 14 days. Must occupy the campsite the first night. Bear warning posted.
We would probably stay longer but rain is on the way.
We took a 38 foot fifth wheel and dually here no problem.

GPS: 44.337, -71.386 - We actually stay here 09/17/22, This is in the White Mountain National Forest on Jefferson Notch Rd. There is dispersed camping along about eight miles, there is one site before this one. Our site was about 2 ¾ miles from the paved road off Rt 2. The road is packed-dirt and very well maintained by the forest service. It’s hilly and curvy but I was able to pass another vehicle coming the other way.
This spot is large enough for three big rigs and you can easily turn a big rig around. There’s three fire pits. We had it all to ourselves for the first four days, then a tenting family set up a campsite. This dry camping/boondocking, so no electric, water, or sewage, self containment is a must and pack everything out. There is no Verizon signal, sorry don’t know about any others. The spot is wide open to the sky, so solar and Starlink is good. One van-lifer stopped in one day and set up their Starlink antenna and worked a while then left. We were able to run our generator pretty much as we wanted, but we just did an hour or so in the morning and at night
We drove the entire length of Jefferson Notch Rd. and this was the only spot that would accommodate anything bigger than a 19’ van, most are tent sites with a few big enough for a van, pop up or very small pull behind.
This was a nice spot; it was peaceful and quiet and we’d stay here again. P.S. WaterWheel Restaurant serves awesome breakfast, just a little West on 2 from Valley Rd. And if you get the “Bear” Omelet and finish it leave a note.

A lot of the sites are walk-in, but there are definitely a few that aren’t, I had no trouble finding an open one. During busy times and weekends I think they give tickets if you’re not parked in the right place, so if you’re coming from Base Station Road, make sure you drive all the way up to the height of land, you’ll see a sign with the elevation and an area to park for hiking, and then you can legally stay anywhere past that. Pretty sure you can even stay in the hikers parking area for the night in a vehicle as well. Enjoy!
