After reading many of the reviews with "instructions" on how to get to the so-called camping area (the area with the pair of vault toilets), we stumbled along the wrong road and therefore make this post to clarify the previously posted directions. It is true "do not follow your GPS". It is also true that you have to enter from Nevada after exiting I15 at the Primm (Nevada) exit (just northeast of the Nevada/Colorado state line) and drive to the rear of the multi-casino complex where you will be greeted with several signs for the BLM Ivanpah Dry Lake Recreation Area. The trouble is . . . there are lots of signs and at least two roads. We were 'lured' to take the sandy road along the fence line (the fence line divides California and Nevada and defines the edge of the Recreation Area) for two reasons: 1) there was a large parking lot with several informational signs for this Area on this sandy road; and, 2) there was a large Ivanpah Dry Lake sign (just past the parking area with those informational signs) also along the sandy fenceline road. But, alas, notwithstanding all this enticement, driving along this dubious road (sand is not deep enough to get stuck even considering our 2 wheel drive, low clearance, ProMaster), this road only leads you to a closed gate with no access to the dry lake bed or the noted vaulted toilets. The entrance you want is the first entrance, a right turn through a gate (with a lock which, we gather, is generally not locked). There are signs here, too, but they are of lower 'key' and merely alert you to the rules. We were initially reluctant to enter as we thought this was the access to the dry lake itself - - on which motor vehicles are prohibited. It is the entrance to the dry lake, but it also includes a very drivable and well marked road that takes one along the edge of the dry lake to the toilets and to a spacious gravel area for parking/camping. There was only one other camper there the night we stopped and two wind-surfing wheeled vehicles on the dry lake. Frankly, for us, the several brightly illuminated "solar aggregators" across I15 were of more interest than those occasional dry lake wind surfer. And, as noted by others, the site was very quiet - - could see, but rarely hear I15's traffic.

Tried to access this spot and the gate was closed. The West Dry Lake gate was open and a good overnight!

We were going to stay overnight in the parking lot at Cactus Pete’s, but then we saw the reviews of this place, which is just behind the Flying J and casino.
This is so much nicer! We didn’t go much past the gate, but we got into the desert with incredible sunset views. It’s much quieter, not so close to the freeway or the bright casino lights.
I definitely recommend this as a stopover. The downside is that, even in September, the temps can be hot. We hung out in the shade of the casino until sunset before moving out on to the BLM land.

Tried to stay here, but was foiled by "Authorized Vehicles Only" signs and the roads didn't seem to be headed anywhere inspiring. Decided to keep driving and stay in the Mojave National Preserve.
