We camped in this beautiful location while on a motorcycle vacation. We wanted to ride the Bear tooth Hwy so this was the perfect spot.
This site was just outside of the Basin (pay) campground which is $18 per night, but this site is free. The road leading to the site is gravel with a few small holes, but not nothing that you can't negotiate.
We camped on the river side in a nice pull through area that a big can fit a big rig. We were on motorcycles, so we had plenty of room.
No amenities so its just right if you are self contained. We had no cell service in this site.
The running river was nice and cold in mid June.
We used a filtration system to get drinking water from the river.
There was a little trash that the previous campers left behind, so we picked it up and took it with us.
Otherwise it was a clean location.
We were there on a weekend and it was extremely peaceful with the sound of the river rushing by. The only traffic were a few vehicles passing by heading to Cascade (pay) campground... $15 a night, it is approx. 2 miles further up the road.
The town of Red Lodge is approx. 8-10 miles away, and is a great starting point for the Bear Tooth Hwy.
If you are short on funds and looking for a little semi quiet spot I would recommend checking it out.
We will definitely return.

We drove around the national forest looking for free campsites. There's quite a lot of dispersed camping in the area close to red lodge. We found a small dispersed camping area right by basin campground with 3 campsites. Basin campground charges $17 per night for no hookups. We loved our spot nestled underneath the trees. Very quiet too. We saw 3 deer outside our airstream. No cell service but you aren't far at all from red lodge. Definitely recommend. We wished we could have stayed longer.
