Visited to check out and see if I wanted to purchase a non-resident annual pass. Very disappointed. Steep very dusty rutted road in one of the loops I visited. Rustic, out of date campground that looks pretty unattended to. Black Canyon down the road a bit and part of the NF is much nicer. I suppose I ought to try a couple of other state parks before deciding on purchasing an annual pass, but if I had to decide based on Hyde Memorial I’d pass.

We arrived on a Sunday in April, desperate for a site because our first stop farther up the mountain didn’t work out. The campground is a little weird because it appears to be spread out along the main road with several loops to pull off at. We just pulled into the first one we saw which had about 6 electric sites, only 1 left available so we jumped on it. It was level, but all sites (at our loop at least) were directly next to the road, so there was considerable car noise at night. Each site had a picnic table and fire pit with grill. There was one vault toilet and zero garbage cans. I would only stay here again if I wanted to be close to Santa Fe, otherwise there’s quieter campgrounds for the same price.

Beautiful little park in the mountains. I almost gave it a five star rating just because this is the first time we've been back into the big forest mountains in a long, long time.
There are some RV hookup sites (probably just water and electric) but only a handful, in their own area, and they were full up. I assume they're next to impossible to get.
Even the regular sites were nearly full on a Monday at 2pm, so apparently this is quite the popular spot. The regular sites seem pretty gnarly for those wanting to camp in an RV as even our van had a little trouble making it up the dirt road...and when I turned around to drive back down and pay a ranger gave me a signal I thought was a hand wave but instead meant, "Slow down, turn around, and quit being a rookie."
Vault toilets were pretty clean.
Absolutely no AT&T service so we didn't stay for long, given that some of us have to work, unlike these freeloading rangers who get to hang around making trails and listening to the birds gossip all day.

The National Forest Campground was closed so I went up here to stay. It was nearly full. The sites are mostly just pull-offs from the main road (one-lane, one-way). Almost did not get a spot, only 2 left on a Sunday night. Looks like several people had been there quite a while. Creek running down the mountain was nice as you could hear the water. A bit noisy as anyone coming through the park has to go past you (on the one lane road) and the park is along the highway that goes farther up the mountain.
One night stay, close to Santa Fe and Los Alamos.
