Overall Rating
Easy access from the highway, a few bumps until you meet the Y in the access road. If you have a large trailer, or Class A I’d stop and walk Right and Left to find the side you like. Most have trees, with a few sites that can take a few RV’s. You might here some traffic, but it’s a mountain road and not that much traffic after dark

Straight off the bat theirs no service for AT&T.
Secondly it’s a dispersed camping along a dirt road and it gets pretty crowded quick. Although some spots are at an incline and people normally avoid those area, but if you back in against the incline and plan to sleep in your diver or passenger seat it’s works out great

We stayed here 2 nights on our journey north. Plenty of spaces and quiet. It has some highway noise but not much at night. Clean and road in is little bumpy but we managed with our 30ft travel trailer and truck. Would stay here again if in area. Close to Lake Tahoe too.

We had gotten to camp at around 5pm or so, and there was already a lot of spots taken and we luckily had a nice tucked away spot near to but not close to other campers. We had gotten to camp at around 5pm or so, and there was already a lot of spots taken and we luckily had a nice tucked away spot near to but not close to other campers. Very little noise from the road but other wise peaceful When we had gone here, the wind was super loud in the trees but never did push our tent wildly. The wind started to pick up at about 7pm and led on into the early morning at about 6am.
Road Traversal:
Easy peasy. I am sure that if and when it rains it may get more difficult, but when it has been dryer weather, its very good.
Other Details:
Our camp spot, which was probably the third one in if you take a left once you pull in from the highway/ main road, could at MOST fit two vehicles with enough room for tent(s). Most spots looked like at least 1-2 vehicles could fit.
Very peaceful besides the raging wind. We had gone here in early Sept. 2023.

Closed for now. The sign says it is closed for restoration and no indication if and when it will open. Hope Valley area is beautiful, camped a mile further at Sno Park, parking lot but still has great views. Gets busy overnight and nice and peaceful in the day. No cell AT&T

Great Spot. A Bit Noisy From The Nearby Highway, But Does Down At Night. Lots To Do In The area. Felt Safe. Lots Of 4x4s So Expect Some Noise From That Too. Markleeville Is The Closest Supplies We Found.

Super easy to find and there were quite a few spaces for people to park and camp. We arrived on a Wednesday so the place wasn’t too busy. More people showed up as the weekend got closer. ATT had no service here

Nothing beats free, but some free spots are definitely better than others: Hope valley dispersed campground delivers on almost everything on my list. Hope valley dispersed campground delivers on almost everything on my list. I have very low ground clearance (Mazda van) and AWD, so I cannot go too far off road. The campsites are located along a short gravel road right off the highway. Google took me straight there! The gravel road has some dips and rocks but if you go slow, anyone can make it.
The campsites are clean and almost all provide good shade for the entire day, and best of all- VERY QUIET! I arrived on a Friday afternoon and had no troubles finding a spot, and despite other families coming in with their RVs or ATVs, they went to play elsewhere and so the campground is mostly quiet.
No toilets, must come prepared and pack in-pack out.
Reasonable cell service. Calls and texts are fine, with between 2-3 bars of Verizon network. Internet can be slow or fail to load occasionally, so not great for digital nomads,
Best of all, you are only a 30 min drive to “civilization”, whether that’s in Tahoe or across the state line to Carson City Nevada. Target, Walmart, Trader Joe’s even,, anything you need to refuel is within 30mins of the campsite.
No fires right now due to fire restrictions. Ranger drives thru campsite couple times a day and makes sure no one has any fires going.

Homboldt-Toiyable National Forest and specifically the Hope Valley recreation area are still under winter closures. Arrived in the afternoon after reading up online about dispersed camping here. No indications it wouldn't be open. Drove 1mile Hope Valley Sno Park instead.

Just went to check this spot out and the gate is closed. I continued about a mile down the road to the sno-park parking lot, which you can camp in for free. It sits on a river and pond, and has a restroom. Makes no sense that you can camp here but a local confirmed you can. He also me the dispersed site is closed because of all the sno... more
Just went to check this spot out and the gate is closed. I continued about a mile down the road to the sno-park parking lot, which you can camp in for free. It sits on a river and pond, and has a restroom. Makes no sense that you can camp here but a local confirmed you can. He also me the dispersed site is closed because of all the snow and snow-melt.
Can't wait to get back and check out Hope Valley Dispersed because this area is amazing for hiking and off-road.
NOTE: Three bars of Verizon LTE, 15mg down and up. AT&T is a flat "no internet."

Closed from Jan 14, 2022 - April 30, 2022 for the season. However there is a small dirt “parking lot” directly in front of the locked gate. I stayed there for the night. I’m writing this before morning- so not sure if I’ll get the knock and tell me to move- but as of right now- there are no signs here that say you can’t stay overnight.... more

There was a locked gate and sign stating "no motorized vehicles" on 05/18/20.
