The WORST USACE park in which I’ve camped. Booked Site #43 online for three nights early October 2024; before park closed for the season to visit an old friend who lives in Fayetteville. It was conveniently located and the price was $24 per night for electric/water site, which is comparable to most USACE parks. However, upon arrival I realized all sites had electric only; no water. There are roughly five (5) water spigots broadly located throughout the park. My bad! I should’ve looked more closely at site details before booking. Minor inconvenience for a tent camping trip.
Secondly, bathrooms are a negative for this park. One nasty vault toilet (no water) within walking distance of Site 43 and other sites towards the back of the park. I preferred to drive approximately 1/4 mile to the only other bathroom (it had running water and showers), but still nasty. Major mold issues in showers, which should have been mitigated before painting shower walls white. Now, you can easily see the black mold growing through the layers of paint. No trash cans in bathroom, which seemed odd.
The glaring problem with this USACE park is NO CONTROLLED ENTRY. No gates to close at closing time (I assume 10PM); thus, ANYONE can enter and leave the park at any hour, to include, but not limited to midnight-1AM. And they do regardless if they reserved a camping site or not. Lack of controlled entry allows unfettered access by anyone to this park; at anytime. Example: One night at 10:30PM, some inconsiderate RV campers pulled into our small camping loop with a huge 5th wheel toy hauler, and proceeded to noisily back into a narrow back-in site in the dark.
That same night about 11PM, someone decided to fire off 20-30 rounds of high-powered rifle fire in the vicinity of the marina. Needless to say, Hickory Creek Park is not a very safe place to be, especially camping in a tent. Therefore, I departed a day earlier than planned, as I did not feel safe remaining any longer.

The main reason we camped here was to visit Crystal Bridges, the new museum built and founded by WalMart heir, philanthropist, and arts patron Alice Walton. We were surprised by how built-up the area seemed and the extent the topography has changed since I was last in the area over fifty years ago. The typical fast foods and retail stores now dot the landscape like a hungry hoard of fruit flies.
On the way south we stopped to visit The Gordon Parks Museum at Fort Scott Community College, Fort Scott, KS. We had no idea it was there and that Parks grew up in this town. Definitely worth checking out. We previously were only aware of his prowess with a camera but Parks was also a gifted musician, writer, screenwriter, and director.
As with most ACoE campgrounds this summer there were no attendants at check-in. We proceeded to our site and set up. The shower room was a bit too far from site 7 and the water spigots are sparsely situated here and there. One to two bars of ATT service but it was manageable, however slow. Our visit to Crystal Bridges was twenty-one miles north of the campground due to my first reservation situated only sixteen miles from the museum being canceled due to a tornado destroying the campground.
Most of the ACoE campgrounds on our trip this summer have been neglected and under-staffed. The restrooms generally have been somewhat clean but dated and in dire need of new paint. Nobody seems to clean up the sites after exiting. And outrageous behemoth motorhomes invade the landscape like swarms of killer bees. Not to mention remnants of cellophane wrappers and shards of plastic littering the ground. And cigarette butts. We decided to leave a day early and head for Ozark, Arkansas to see something different.

Stayed in site 11. Plenty of space from neighbors. Don’t be deceived by pictures on Recreation.gov. This site is not directly on lake. The pictures on website must have been taken when lake was flooded.

Electric was available and the site was almost perfectly level. Backed up to the lake. Got water across the road from the dump site but it didn’t have a sign saying it’s ok but we assumed it was. Simple and easy to book and stay.

They have some sites that will accommodate larger RVs. We plan on coming back in warmer weather to enjoy the trails, lake and it’s outdoor ambience.

We needed a place to overnight to avoid a snowstorm further north. This campground was just right. The site was paved and level and we had a nice view of the lake from our side window.

Witnessed people dumping grey water on the ground in their campsite! Also, saw someone in site next to ours dumping their small portable toilet on the ground at the site!
When people depart, they leave their campfires blazing away! Making no effort to extinguish the fire before they leave!
Our first site had a group across from us that had 6-7 cars/trucks at any given time! At one point they had as many as 25 people there (limit is 8).
The response from the Hosts was that there was nothing they could do! Most hosts were unfriendly!
Also, it appears that mufflers on trucks in this area are strictly optional!
